Product Description

Over four days at the beginning of September AD 9, half of Rome's Western army was ambushed in a German forest and annihilated. Three legions, three cavalry units and six auxiliary regiments—some 25,000 men—were wiped out. It dealt a body blow to the empire's imperial pretensions and was Rome's greatest defeat. No other battle stopped the Roman empire dead in its tracks. From the moment of the Teutoburg Forest disaster, the Rhine, rather than the Elbe as the Romans had hoped, became the limit of the civilized world. Rome's expansion in northern Europe was checked and Rome anxiously patrolled the Rhineland borders, awaiting further uprisings from Germania. Although one of the most significant and dramatic battles in European history, this is also one that has been largely overlooked. Drawing on primary sources and a vast wealth of new archeological evidence, Adrian Murdoch brings to life the battle itself, the historical background, and the effects of the Roman defeat as well as exploring the personalities of those who took part.

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
As some reviewers have correctly pointed out, very little of this book deals directly with the battle alluded to in its title. However, there is much information on the Roman Empire's campaigning in the territories east of the Rhine, on the political relationship between Rome and the various Germanic tribes, on some of the key individuals involved and on the battle's aftermath - both short-term and very long-term. The author's writing style is authoritative, clear and very scholarly, yet one that is still accessible to a broad readership. However, perhaps because of this scholarly style, the passages that describe the actual battle - passages that could have been quite gripping - lose some steam because of the author's intermittent commentary on the various events as they are presented. This is likely to emphasize the fact that the lack of Roman survivors has resulted in no reliable written accounts of the actual details. However, other battle scenes that are described, i.e., Germanicus's successful campaigns, are indeed quite riveting.

In the second last chapter, the author focuses on a significantly different theme: he describes the impact that Arminius's victory has had on Germany over the past few centuries, as expressed through literature, art, theatre, politics, German national/ethnic sentiment, etc. Although it deviates significantly from the book's main theme, this chapter may be viewed as a bonus by some readers or as unnecessary or even detracting by others. I have read a number of renditions of this battle over the years and although this one may not be the most engaging, I believe that it's the most scholarly.
