Product Description

From Amazon.com

Singer-songwriter John Mayer fills his debut, Room for Squares, with pep talks to and advertisements for himself. Even when questioning his young life, Mayer's doubts come off glib; not one second of "Why Georgia" convinces that "the stirring in my soul" keeps the artiste awake at night. Between his Dave Matthews-wannabe vocals and the accomplished but bland lite rock of his band, he could be just as easily offering tunes for hire to a coming-of-age network series as making a stand for himself and his worldview. The premise of "City Love"--that Mayer couldn't find his way around Manhattan until finding a girlfriend to root him to the place--is nice but not edifying. "My Stupid Mouth" is similarly fuzzy; letting us in on just what he said to alienate a dinner partner would've gone a long way toward fleshing out the song's pat self-deprecation. Ultimately, Mayer comes off less like a commiserating friend than a blabbermouth who's forever forgetting there's someone else in the room. And instead of whining about a discarded lunch box ("83"), dude, learn to brown-bag it the way the rest of us did. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars A step back from the noise..., April 23 2003
By
Matthew Vorwald "m_vorwald" (Bonita Springs, FL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Room for Squares (Audio CD)
I read all the negative reviews directed towards Room for Squares and thought to myself, "these folks must be missing something!" John's writing and musical styles are not tailored for the 21st century norm of loud, complicated, and tacky songs overcrowded with attempts to sell sell sell. What his music does provide is a step away from the noisy rush of our society to explore the winding emotional rollercoaster that engulfs our mid-20's. Each song specifically targets a time in life where one steps back and evaluates "where am i going?" If you are looking for the answer, then you will be disappointed. But if you can appreciate the question, then you will love this album.

2.0 out of 5 stars NO SUCH THING...AS MUSIC MATURATION, Aug 25 2002
This review is from: Room for Squares (Audio CD)
Unlike superior singer/songwriters such as Ryan Adams,Pete Yorn,
Badly Drawn Boy,and others, young lad John Mayer has some missing elements:sophistication, meaningfulness, and originality. To be fair,Mayer's voice is decent although it'd be nice if he stopped doing Dave Matthews imitations and found his own voice. His guitar playing is passable at best. But the songs are another story. The lyrics seem written out of a ninth grader's notebook. No strength or depth. The first single "No Such Thing" is laughable as we get a amaturish tune about being the "un-cool kid" in school.Oh whoppie! Of all the [messed] up things in the world and in life and this dude's whining about high school! Stop the insanity!

After a good listen of "Room To Squares" it's very obvious that like Alicia Keys,Vanessa Carlton, and eh...Michelle Branch,Mayer is a immature, shallow high school kid that thinks copying their folks' records makes them deep while they write high school-level lyrics and play instruments at a beginner's level. No matuartion and real depth.Because he's groomed to be a "teen idol" and his music is plain and unoffensive,Mayer will do alright as far as commerically and press-wise.But REAL music listeners know better.

"Room For Squares" isn't god-awful but WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ARTIST DEVOLPMENT??? Stop throwing these kids out here when they haven't had any devolpement and experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD you will never want to take out of your CD Player, July 13 2002
This review is from: Room for Squares (Audio CD)
I first heard John Mayer on the radio a couple of months ago and fell in love with his song "No Such Thing", but thought that I could get by with just hearing it on the radio every now and then. This view quickly changed when my friend played me her copy of the CD and I immediately went out and got my own copy! I LOVE the sound Mayer gets from his guitar and his lyrics are really touching. They actually sound genuine, unlike many of today's popular singers, and added to the wonderful background of guitar and band make for a great CD.

As a side comment, I've heard that Mayer has been called "The New Dave Matthews", and while I agree with this slightly, I would have to say that Mayer's soothing, yet upbeat songs allow me to easily differentiate between the two. I play Dave when I want something with a little bit of an edge to it (especially "Everyday") and Mayer when I want to sit back and relax after a long day. I'd recommend both John Mayer and Dave Matthews to anyone who likes the sound of the guitar and vocals and also to those who want music that they can easily sing along to and make them feel good.
