Winner of the Canadian Library Association's Book of the Year for Children, Janet Lunn's The Root Cellar is an exciting novel of magic and mystery, a fascinating time-travel adventure that takes 12-year-old Rose Larkin into the history of the very farmhouse on Hawthorn Bay where she's just come to live. Not that Rose Larkin wants to be in Hawthorn Bay in Aunt Nan and Uncle Bob's ramshackle old house. She'd much rather be living back in New York City with her grandmother, but her grandmother has died, and Rose has nowhere else to go. She is absolutely miserable at the farmhouse, at least until she goes exploring and discovers the root cellar. Not just a cold room for keeping root vegetables through the winter, the cellar is also a door into the past. Through the root cellar, Rose travels back in time to 1862, where she meets Will and Susan and makes friends for the very first time in her life. When Will goes off to Oswego to fight in the American Civil War, it's up to Rose and Susan to get him back. And in helping Will and Susan, Rose begins to wonder if perhaps she has found a place to belong after all.

The Root Cellar has attained the status of a Canadian classic, and it's little wonder, with its thrilling combination of ghost story, historical drama, and adventure tale. Readers will want to find out what else happened at Hawthorn Bay by reading the two books that follow in Lunn's Hawthorn Bay trilogy, Shadow in Hawthorn Bay and The Hollow Tree. (Ages 10 and older) --Jeffrey Canton

Product Description

It looked like an ordinary root cellar—And if twelve-year-old Rose hadn't been so unhappy in her new home, where she'd been sent to live with unknown relatives, she probably would never have fled down the stairs to the root cellar in the first place. And if she hadn't, she never would have climbed up into another century, the world of the 1860s, and the chaos of Civil War…

i read this book back in elementary school, and i enjoyed reading it at the time.

the story follows this orphan girl named rose who is sent to live with relatives after the death of her grandmother. rose is something of a tomboy and doesn't really have any friends, so doesn't feel like she fits in when she arrives and spends a lot of time by herself. one of the places she likes to spend time in is a root cellar near the house, and one day she goes into it only to find herself transported back in time to the 1800's. there she meets a boy and a girl with whom she becomes friends. at that time the civil war was going on, so the boy goes off to fight in it, and the sister and rose then go off in search of him.

it's a good story about a girl finding a place for herself to be accepeted and needed, and be finding that she gains a little more self-confidence. it's fun and adventerous and even throws a bit of history in there as well.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The BEST book ever!!, Nov. 12 2002
Par Un client
If you like adventure then you will love this book "The Root Cellar" by Janet Lunn. This book is about a girl named Rose who goes to relative to relative . If you are wondering why, it is because her parents died when she was a young girl. and she went to live with her grandma. Her grandma died and then Rose started to go from place to place because the relative died or didn't want her around. Rose travels back in time by going into a root cellar. This book is called "The Root Cellar" because there is a root cellar where Rose enjoys being alone. Rose was never around kids her age , but her grandmothger told her that she was better off without them. She meets two children who are around her age and they create a strong bond. Rose and Sisan, who is one of her new friends, go on an exciting adventure they will remember for the rest of their lives!!!!!! The other child that Rose meets is Will. The book is a five star book to me and I suggest this book yo anyone who doesn't like reading. I hate reading and I loved this book. This book was so descriptive. When you read this book and think about it the book is so relaxing. If you close your eyes you will see the images in your mind it is so descriptive! So anyone can read it!!!!!

5.0étoiles sur 5 One average girl in two different worlds, Mai 28 2002

Ce commentaire est de: The Root Cellar (Paperback)
My book the Root Cellar, is about a girl named Rose. The thing about Rose is that her past is so sad that she never can be happy over anything. So she goes to a special school with only girls. At this school it doesnt really help her until she moves in with a family with twins. At this house Rose discovers a strange root cellar. Then all of a sudden right when the sun and the moon line up she got transported to the 19th century. There Rose meets a boy and a girl named Will and Susan. Together they get mingled into amazing adventures and also meet many other new friends.
Personally in the book my favorite character in the book was Rose because she was so brave, helpful, and a good friend. she was brave because even after her mother and grandmother had died she still wasnt scared of dying. She was also brave by aiding Susan and Will on their adventures and not backing out when the soldier forced them to feed him. The helpful part of Rose was when she never gave up hope for Will. However the most important thing is Rose's friendship. Well thats because she never stoped to find Will even though everybody said he was probably dead and when she always visited them when they mostly needed her comfort.
The most favorite part in the Root Cellar to me is when Rose and Susan go out looking for Will from the war. Well thats because they traveled for days and weeks to find him without their own supply of food. They had to hunt and feed themselves to stay alive. the two also ran into some nasty trouble like the wounded soldier who begged for help with his war rifle right by him. Although that showed how much they all cared about each other and how good of a friendship they had. This is one of the best books that I have ever read, I would truly recomment this book to you.
