Nothing like this had ever confronted so many mainstream Americans when the series was originally broadcast, and the extent to which the country was nudged a degree or two toward enlightenment was instantly obvious. I had watched this mini-series when it first aired on television many years ago. I was VERY disappointed when I tried to relive the experience with the dvd series. How annoying it was when I couldn't remove the subtitles using the menu selections. The English subtitles were so distracting, I couldn't enjoy any of the story. At first, I thought it was only the one side of the first disc, but I discovered that it was on all sides of each disc. Consequently, I never did watch the entire series and will probably throw the set in the garbage. For me, it is unwatchable and I would not recommend that anyone waste their money on purchasing the 30 year anniversary version of ROOTS.
