4.0 out of 5 stars If you like a sweet read, don't pass this by! Dec 8 2000
Rose is a Catholic Acadian woman of French origin who fell in love. Good, right? Well, not good. The man she fell for, Coleman, is both Protestant and English. Not only do they practice separate religions, but the English drove the Acadians from Canada once upon a time and forced Rose's father to be separated from his wife and three daughters. Rose is the youngest of the girls and believes in family. How can her heart be so attached to a man her family will never approve of? Will they ever believe she is capable of making her own decisions? Slowly, Coleman wins the approval of Rose's family, but the trials of love's path are both engrossing and heartwarming. This is worth reading. At times I was angry with Rose's older sister Emilie for being prejudiced against Coleman for simply being English, particularly since he had nothing to do with their exile from Canada all those years ago. But overall this read is too tender to quibble.

Although this book is part of a series, I had no trouble reading it as a standalone book. However, the next book is about Gabrielle, the middle sister. I think she and her pirate will make a fun couple and I'd like to know if her father reunites with his family. I'll stay tuned.

5.0 out of 5 stars pure Cajun flavor! Oct 28 2000
This second story in The Acadians trilogy is so thick with Cajun atmosphere you can almost feel the humid heat of Louisiana and the mosquitoes lighting on your skin.

Rose is the youngest daughter of the Gallant family. She is not as beautiful or as obedient as her two older sisters. However, she is passionate and knows her heart's desire, which is Englishman Coleman Thorpe.

The proud Acadian family were uprooted from their home and separated from their much loved husband and father thirteen years ago. And they blame the English for their terrible ordeal. Rose knew her family would never accept her love for Coleman yet longed to follow her heart above all else.

Coleman is at his lowest when a hurricane wipes out his already failing farm. Rose finds him injured, drunk and passed out and her heart goes out to him. She can not leave him in this condition regardless of what her family would think of her assisting him in any way. Besides she knows she most do what is best for her family by accepting the proposal of their new boss even though she yearned to be with Coleman instead. A tender situation all around!

Rose and Coleman will entrance you with their love for each other...a very touching romance fulfilled. This story is why readers enjoy trilogies.....it picks up from the first book yet uniquely it stands alone. As well as introduces the next exciting story to come. A saga of a proud family that is told quite wonderfully!

I have to say this is my all time favorite book. I bought it about 5 years ago and since I keep going back and re-reading not only this book but all 4 books of the series. This is a great story of how love overcomes all not matter what.
