An excellent Barber of Seville, July 6 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Rossini;Gioacchino Il Barbiere (DVD)
This DVD contains some great singers, but sadly few are widly known. Cecilia Bartoli is a young, beautiful Rosina. Her highlight was "Una voce poco fa". One of my favorites was Count Almaviva, played by David Kuebler. His acting was as good as his singing. "Ecco ridente in cielo" is a must hear aria. My other favorite was Gino Quilico as Figaro. His comic acting was outstanding, espically in Act II. His best piece was, of course, "Largo al factotum". As Doctor Bartolo, Carlos Feller was excellent, espically toward the end in Act II. Robert Lloyd was a deep, powerful Don Basilio. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by a great conductor in Gabriele Ferro. I highly reccomended this DVD to anyone who likes The Barber of Seville.

This review is from: Rossini;Gioacchino Il Barbiere (DVD)
I just loved this production of Il Barbiere done with the Stuttgart Symphony and directed by Gabriele Ferro.Quilico is terrific as the barber and a young Cecilia Bartoli is the same. What great casting. It's nice to see a handsome Count Almaviva that can sing and is'nt 5 foot tall'.Doctor Bartolo is also outstanding as sung by Carlos Feller and the rest of the cast is fine as well. What a joy.The best Barbiere that I know of. Get it !!

Beautiful Barbiere!, Feb 8 2011
This review is from: Rossini;Gioacchino Il Barbiere (DVD)
I am a Rossini fan and I own 3 DVDs with Il Barbiere. The best one is in my humble opinion the Glyndebourne festival one with Maria Ewing and John Rawnsley. The worst is one with Juan Diego Florez (it was not his fault). But this production comes very close for being the best. I loved all the singers. Cecilia Bartoli is a beautiful Rosina, her coloratura is like always, amazing. Like Maria Ewing, she is very young and brings credibility to the role. Count Almaviva (David Kuebler) is much better than Cosotti, and close to JDF. His voice is powerful and agile, with great coloratura and acting. I loved this tall, handsome Count Almaviva. Gino Quilico is a great Figaro. Both his voice and acting were a wonderful surprise. His Largo al factotum is delicious. Bartolo is played by Carlos Feller. He has a dark baritone voice and his good acting were apropiate for Bartolo portrayal. Among the best of all was Robert Lloyd as Don Basilio. He is a great bass, and had great ovations for his La calunnia aria. The theater is small, but the production is beautiful. The DVD has a 4:3 image and pcm stereo sound. I recommend it to any Rossini lover.
