Product Description

Opening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which you were never sure which adults you could trust--William Sadleir trod a fine line of ambiguity as the local sheriff and Julie Benz was silkily sinister as an FBI agent. Anyone who ever loved this show will want these DVDs--and many others may want to find out what the fuss was about.

Roswell is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. The special features include commentaries on six episodes by writer Jason Kanims, the directors, and various cast members as well as a featurette on the making of the show and another on its adaptation from the original Roswell High series of young adult novels. The commentaries are unusually insightful on the casting process, and the discs also include the auditions for the part of Tess as well as a deleted scene and a music video. --Roz Kaveney

True, following mysterious events in Roswell is no new subject. However, aliens that are basically human in everything but their blood type that allows them the abilities even most superheroes would envy. The only three downfalls of the series all together, were #1: They did not learn 95% of their powers until the second season and #2: local tv shows don't usually rake in enough dough for special effects, so they can't really use the powers at full force until season 3 which leads to #3: season 3 was given to the crudiest producers ever, UPN20 (instead of its original WB39). UPN destroyed and mutilated every chance this show had of making a fourth season.
yes, the music has changed a bit, but if you actually bought the set and did not download it illegally or copy a friend's, you can read the memo that states "if the music was not changed, it never would have been released." I admit, the music changes drastically effect some episodes, and 99% of the new music sounds like the exact same band from a garage with the doors shut and no real sound equipment. But I would rather have the set and not worry about it.
As far as the first season being the worst, it's not true, the third was the worst (it was the x-files on crack). The only real bad thing about the first is the fact that it took 26 episodes for them to form a cool group of central characters. the whole "trying to keep it secret" thing was suspensful, but also extreemly anoying.

Thanks for finally coming out on DVD. If you missed this great series on television, you now have a chance to see it on DVD. It offers something for everyone. Sharp writing, quick wit, tension and suspense, and great acting by cast members who really make their characters come to life. Now, if they will just get around to releasing the next two seasons.

A few years ago I put my tv on and bumbed onto Roswell. During the pilot I found myself caught in the story of three aliens who try to survive on Earth and try to figure out where they come from and where they belong. The first season was probably the best, although season two was great too. It's really ashame that UPN destroyed the series and made it this terrible X-Files clone. Luckily I will always have season one to watch and enjoy.
When I bought the DVD, I had to buy it in France by the way cause in Belgium I could hardly find it, I watched the 22 episodes in like, two days. I hardly slept in between but it was so worth it: this DVD is the best ever!!! My mother practically had to drag me off the computer (haven't got a normal DVD-player, had to watch it on my computer)
Roswell is a series that combines the highschool issues and alien problems perfectly. There is no series like it and there probably never will be again. I noticed the change of music and do find it a pity but at least now it's affordable.
I hope season two will be released on DVD soon, I will definitely buy that one too. I don't think I will buy the season three DVD since I hate what UPN did to my favourite series.
Still, this series just rocks!

Why did I not watch this show until the DVD? I was afraid it would be BUFFY meets DAWSONS CREEK -- BUFFY's CREEK or DAWSON THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Teen shows were hot at the time, and it was hard to keep track! ROSWELL came along quietly with its Sci Fi metaphor - the alienation you feel as a teenager expressed by three aliens...the space kind. It was a totally new way to revel in the timeless drama of ROMEO AND JULIET - impossible first love. Nowhere NEAR as violent or dark as BUFFY, and also more mystical than DAWSON's CREEK - ROSWELL stands on its own quite well in this DVD set covering the first season.
The story is about alien teenagers who live as humans in Roswell, and the impact they have when their secret is outed when a random act of violence forces one of them to save the life of a girl he has loved from afar. Secrets fester, and love rears its head as the whole town begins to suspect something is up ... especially when the FBI comes in under everyone's radar. I gauge good Sci Fi by how much it explores what it means to be "human", and this series does that EXTREMELY well.
The DVDs are in widescreen, and have commentaries scattered throughout. 23 episodes, and a couple of featurettes -- one on the making of the series, and another about the BOOK SERIES this show was based on. A GREAT CAST, a wonderful pilot and set-up, beautiful music (Dido's "HERE WITH ME" in the opening fits so well!), and solid stories make this definitely a DVD to check out.

Roswell continues to be one of my favorite tv series, one that I will watch over and over, whenever I am in the mood for some "good TV". I still have most of the episodes on VHS, and my favorites are still on TIVO, but I am very happy that they finally released the first season (the best of the 3 seasons)onto DVD. Yes, there are music changes that unfortunately sometimes substantially lessens the impact of some of the key scenes (the original music score was wonderful), but the superior picture clarity of the dvds (over tv and vhs)still makes it more than worth it to purchase this dvd set. And to get all of the episodes without those annoying station logos and commercials? Any fan of Roswell will enjoy this set. The only other shows that I can watch like this (repeatedly, with enjoyment) are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Highlander-the series. I look forward to the release of the 2nd season onto DVD. p.s. I am one of those older-aged fans, mid-forties, attracted to the wonderful characterizations and relationships between the cast members, as well as some of the best cinematography and writing that I have seen.
