Book Description

Oct. 16 2012

Famed woodworker and Emmy Award-nominated talent Tommy "Mac" MacDonald takes readers by the hand to create all 13 projects from the second season of public television's smash hit, Rough Cut--Woodworking with Tommy Mac.

Woodworkers of all levels will love constructing both traditional and contemporary pieces such as a drop-leaf table, an Arts and Crafts-style chair, a splayed-leg console table, and a sand-shaded clock. Tommy's encouraging style will give readers the confidence they need to take his tips and techniques and put them into action. All 13 pieces come with a full plan with dimensions, materials list, step-by-step instructions, and even design options. "Road trip" sidebars allow fellow builders to visit workshops of both established and up-and-coming furniture makers, where even a pro like Tommy picked up interesting nuggets.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware of the cut lists! Dec 17 2013
By Bryan Norton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is decent for project ideas, techniques, and general woodworking info. Tommy Mac is very talented and is generally a good teacher. My problem with this book is that some specific project information is just plain wrong. I purchased it wanting to make the dressing mirror on the cover. I purchased very expensive cherry to do the project in and glued, cut, and otherwise prepared the wood according to the cut list. That's where the problems started. I'm not sure who wrote the cut list or where the editor was when verifying the information but my best guess on where they came up with the dimensions is that they employed a drunk monkey to spin a wheel with numbers on it, then multiply that by 'bananas' and type numbers into a computer blindfolded. The numbers are just not going to produce a box like is pictured. There's not just one mistake either; many of the dimensions and even the quantity of pieces are wrong, unless you want a box with only one side and as tall as it is wide. I was going for a small dressing mirror, not kitchen cabinets. Next time, I'll be more careful to plan things out before I purchase, cut, and glue the wood, but I'm disappointed that Tommy Mac would put out a book with so many errors.

I am a big fan of Tommy Mac. I have had the book from the first season, and am enjoying that from the second. The plans and suggestions are just right for my level of craftsmanship, and I am looking forward to doing several of the included projects. Any woodworker will benefit with this in his or her library. Pastor Chuck
