Great guidebook,
This review is from: Rough Guide India 8e (Paperback)
I havent been to India yet, but I'm in the planning stages and so far I have found this book to be really helpful. I've been spending a lot of time researching on forums and places like Indiamike, and find the information in this book to mostly match what I'm reading from other people's experiences. The layout is done well, and I think it's generally a good read. The author is less stuffy and more honest than some other authors who write guidebooks. The pages are a bit flimsy, but that probably helps the book to stay as light as possible given its size. Lots of information, and I like the way it is written. I own the frommers and lonely planet ebooks for India and so far I like the Rough guide best! This book is also more up to date than other books on the market. After my trip I will have to update on the information being found in this book.

Way better than Lonely Planet,
By Nomad (Shanghai) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rough Guide India 7e (Paperback)
Please ignore the reviewers who value form more than substance. If you're used to the Lonely Planet layout it will obviously take some time to get used to the Rough Guide layout. And while the Rough Guide hotel price codes are not as intuitive as actual prices, they do not give you a false sense of accuracy since prices fluctuate wildly in the travel industry. But for anyone who wants to get the most out of their precious vacation time, Rough Guide beats Lonely Planet hands down. It easily packs twice the amount of information as Lonely Planet in the same number of pages, while Lonely Planet seems to devote half the pages to hotel and restaurant reviews. Of course, Rough Guide is for people who enjoy reading. If mere sight of words gives you headaches, you'll be better off with DK or Insight Guides.

Not impressed,
This review is from: Rough Guide India 7e (Paperback)
Perhaps it's because of the fact that I am so used to Lonely Planet's layout, organization, etc...but I found the book to be all over the place. I'll give it another try before my trip.
