not up to the usual standard for a Rough Guide map

This is titled as a New York City map, but it's really a Manhattan map because it only covers Manhattan (and a tiny bit of Brooklyn) in any real detail. The 'Around New York' mini map section does show the surrounding boroughs, but very sparsely...only the largest roads and highways. The main parts of the map show Manhattan in a detail level that is adequate for getting around.
The main map divides southern and northern Manhattan into two adjacent sections; it's useable but unsettling because you have to mentally put them back together to get a whole picture of Manhattan. The many closeup sections are useful, but even more awkward because of their arrangement and because their locations on the main map are not shown very clearly.
On the up-side, Rough Guide maps are one of the few that are truly waterproof. And they pinpoint many restaurants and smaller specialty cultural establishments that other, more generic and politically-correct maps don't...it digs deeper in that regard. And their medium size is good for traveling.
