* Product Description/ A few thoughts about Roxio/ Sonic Solutions
** Testing of products
*** Free Alternatives
**** Conclusion

* Roxio Creator 2010 is the latest audio/video and photo editing and presentation suite from Sonic Solutions for the Windows OS. It is the Windows alternative to their Mac-compatible suite, "Toast."

Creator 2010 is a suite of 13 different softwares:
--Back On Track
--CinePlayer
--Creator Classic
--Label Creator
--Media Manager
--Music Disc Creator
--My DVD
--Photo Show Express
--Photo Suite
--Roxio Burn Options
--Sound Editor
--Video Copy and Convert
--Video Wave

Creator 2010 is about 2.5GB of space on the hard drive, but if the installation disc does not see at least "5 GB" of free hard drive space it will not allow you to install. I had 50GB to spare. No problem, I've been using Roxio's Toast for about 10 years now, and up until they made some administrative (economic) decisions about the quality of products they were going to issue, I wouldn't have suspected that any product with the Roxio name was be lacking. That was until 6 months ago, a trip to the Apple Store and $320 later when I found out that Toast had to be removed because it was incompatible with OSX 5.8 and Quicktime Pro.

I got around Creator's inability to see the extra storage by buying an 8 GB thumb drive. I now have Creator '10 installed and ran 6.5 hours of testing on WinXP. These are my findings:

** CinePlayer-- There are several programs that do not recognize the system's profile, such as the displays resolution. As a result, I've had to exit the software and re-engage it. CinePlayer states that it has support for 18 different file formats.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked great on VISTA, works terrible on Win7 April 14 2010
Format:DVD-ROM
I had used Roxio Creator for many years now but stopped using it after problems with version 7 or 8. When 2010 came out, I decided to give it a shot and found once I had installed it on my Windows Vista operating system that it was working fine. I even got my girlfriend a copy. A year later, I've upgraded to Windows 7 and while everything else I own works well with the new operating platform, I found that many of the old problems have popped up again in Windows 7. Creator Classic, which is the most robust tool that I enjoy using to batch convert files simply no longer works. A patch that is supposed to resolve issues in Windows 7 based on the error I get does not work. The main shell for Roxio Creator 2010 seems nicely laid out but some features are too simplistic for my taste, which is why I prefer to use the Creator Classic shell but now, I cannot. It's very unfortunate that what used to be a very good program is reduced to a shell of its former self. For now, if you are using Windows 7, avoid using Creator 2010.

ROXIO CREATOR (minus 10) and Customer Service (minus 15)
We bought this software to work with a Blu-Ray drive and when we received it, it needed a plug-in to work as advertised ! When we finally reached the customer service (which is a long and insidious process by it self !), they told us that no separated plug-in was available and that we needed to buy a new more complete version of the same ! We finally bought the complete suite from CyberLink which works flawlessly ! STAY AWAY from ROXIO INCOMPLETE products !!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Tech Support is Non-existent Nov. 24 2009
By Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
First let me state that I am a long-time user of Roxio products and I have always been more than happy. I upgraded to this product only because its predecessor would not work with my current operating system. This is probably a good product however I could never get it to work properly and Roxio's tech support was less than helpful.

I had a problem with saving files and with components of the program spontaneously closing. I also had problems with other programs such as Photoshop Elements after installing this software. Tech support initially gave me the standard answer that I should uninstall and reinstall the program. I did this and it didn't help. They then instructed me to make some changes to my start up and registry files. Doing this not only did not solve my problem, it made my system work irratically. After giving the system a tune up with Norton 360, it worked fine but Easy Media Creator still did not work properly.

Next they asked me to send them my msinfo32 file as an attachment to my help ticket. I did so and did not receive a response. Five days later they closed my help ticket and marked it solved. I replied that they had not responded to the last information I had sent and again attached my msinfo32 file. Five days later they again closed my help ticket without having responded. When I added another reply they responded that I had not sent the msinfo32 file as requested. I sent it a third time. I then got this message: "We cannot troubleshoot your problem with the msinfo32 file we had requested. Please follow the steps below to send us your system information." The steps below instructed me to copy my msinfo32 file and attach it to the help ticket. At this point I gave up. I unstalled the program and now my other software works fine. This seemed to be an indication that the problem might be with the software and not my computer.

As a test to see if the problem really did lie within my computer I installed the software on a new "virgin" computer that uses a different operating system. I had the exact same problems. This further indicates that the problem is with the product not my computers.

I've downloaded a trial version of a similar product by Nero and it seems to be working fine. I think I'll just write off the Roxio software as a loss and order the full version of Nero.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really Bad Experience on Roxio 2010 Pro Dec 21 2009
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
I have been a Roxio user and fan for many years -- and until now, their products have been great, but I have never seen such poor quality and had such a bad experience with a PC software product. After over a dozen hours of effort, this product will not install on Vista, no matter what (and I am a technical person with a degree in Computer Science & years of software experience). Phone support is $1.89 a minute, minimum 15 minutes... and the online support experience is horrendous, prompting me to write this review.

Save your patience, wits, and money and look elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Roxio fan for years - Now, it's just bloatware Dec 27 2009
By TechGuy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
I have used Roxio software for CD/DVD burning since version 4. It was and is good burning software. Up until version 9 or so, it was fairly useful. Even when Roxio started going overboard and adding everything but the kitchen sink, it was possible to choose which components you wanted installed. With the last three versions, that is no longer the case. You either accept the installation of everything, or nothing at all. I will never use the majority of the Roxio Creator components. In fact, I want to use other, more powerful stand-alone applications for photo editing, video capture and editing, etc. Some of the Roxio tools I do not want to use cause conflicts with the tools I do want to use, yet, there is *no way* to uninstall these components I will never use. I contacted Roxio support and their response was "sorry, you accepted the license agreement (which forced you to install *everything*) and we will not help you uninstall portions of the suite, because it will break it and it won't work." I tried to get help on the Roxio forums. The administrator told me to uninstall the entire suite, use something else, and don't let the door hit me in the @#^ on the way out.

I am now using the digital media suite from Roxio's major competitor. Guess what? Even though it also contains a ton of tools I do not want to use, they actually let me, the end user, decide which tools I want to install and use rather than forcing the installation of the entire bloatware suite as Roxio does. Roxio wants to make the choices for me because they know best. I am now a very satisfied user of another product that lets me make my own choices and Roxio has lost me (and anyone else I can influence) as a customer forever.

If you like having bloatware shoved down your throat, you'll love Roxio Creator. The interface is pretty and the integration between components if fairly good; however, if you want to be treated as an adult capable of deciding which software you wish to use and how, keep looking. Roxio does not want you as a customer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow and Inefficient! Oct. 21 2009
By Bill W - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD-ROM
I guess the fact that it took more than thirty minutes to load on my computer, a computer with a 2GHZ processor and 2 GB of RAM, should have been a clue. This software, while adorned with more bells and whistles than one can imagine, is basically a big clunker. It it so big and clunky that it takes five minutes to open the program everytime you want to use it and it then proceeds to consume all of the computers resources while operating. Several features in the software appear not to work, such as Audio Capture. My sound card works great with everything else I do, but Roxio can't recognize the sound card. The process of making a movie is cumbersome and complicated for the average user and you really have to read their entire 200 page manual (not provided but online) to learn the basics. Overall, very disappointed.
