Product Description

From Amazon

In 1595, Nzingha is the strong, intelligent daughter of the Ngola (leader) of the Mbundu people of Ndongo (in modern-day Angola), loyal to her people and willing to fight for them. Unfortunately, because she is a girl, her brother is the favored child, in training to become the next Ngola, even though he is whiny, stupid, and slow (according to Nzingha). But Ajala, a respected seer, believes that Nzingha is destined to be the leader of Ndongo, and begins preparing her for this future. Nzingha's father fights to keep the Portuguese from taking over their homeland, yet it is Nzingha, ultimately, who acts as the go-between for her people and the Portuguese, negotiating acceptable relations in order to keep peace and power for the Mbundu.

Based on true historical events, places, people, and customs, this novel portrays the fascinating details of a remarkable young woman's strength and courage in defending her world against subterfuge, spies, and the onslaught of the Portuguese. Historical notes, photos, illustrations, maps, the Ngola family tree, and a glossary and pronunciation guide are included for a comprehensive understanding of a complex era. Patricia McKissack is the well-respected and award-winning author of over 100 children's books and historical novels, including the Newbery Honor book The Dark-Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural and Color Me Dark: The Diary of Nellie Lee Love (from the Dear America series). (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-Nzingha, an Angolan princess in the 16th and 17th centuries, was born in a land in which women were predestined to be subservient to men's whims. Nzingha, however, broke that rule and, following her father's footsteps, became a leader after his death. Through fictionalized diary entries, readers learn that Queen Nzingha is knowledgeable, intelligent, and brave. She is opposed to Portuguese slavery and European ways of life, although she secretly learns the outsiders' language and uses it to her advantage. The diary format will appeal to readers and the author's use of time lines, seasons, and actual place names makes the story believable and interesting. While the ending is too abrupt, this is still a good addition to the series. The maps, photos, glossary, illustrations, and genealogical trees enhance the presentation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nzingha, Warrioress of Africa, Dec 29 2005
This review is from: Royal Diaries: Nzingha: Warrior Queen of Matamba, Angola, Africa, 1595 (Hardcover)
Nzingha is the daughter of the Ngola Kiluanji of Angola in Africa. Kiluanji is deeply in love with Kangela, Nzingha's mother. Nzingha also has two younger sisters, Mukambu and Kifunji. Kiluanji heartily wishes for Nzingha to succeed him as ruler over their African people, but it is not to be. Kiluanji's heir is young Mbandi, the son of Kiluanji's first wife, Kwumi, who was chosen over Kangela by Kiluanji's family for him to marry. But still, Kiluanji married Kangela in secret. Kwumi is an evil, slithering, cobra with a venomous bite, and Mbandi is simply a dunderheaded fool.

Kiluanji wants Nzingha, a born warrioress and leader, to later rule after him, because he wants someone with wisdom and intelligence to rule, for Nzingha's people are in a raging bloodbath of a war against the evil white Portuguese men, who threaten to take all the African peoples' land away. Can Nzingha and her people triumph?

Patricia McKissack is a very skilled writer, but it definitely does not show here, compared to her other books. The diary is extremely short---only 86 pages! The characters never truly develop, and the good/evil conflict is too rigid and unrealistic. The setting is very interesting, yet everything else just fails.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good book even if it is short, July 6 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Royal Diaries: Nzingha: Warrior Queen of Matamba, Angola, Africa, 1595 (Hardcover)
Nzingha is an excellant book. It was very short no question but it was still fabulous. What I liked about this book was she wasn't your average princess living in luxery she was couragous, strong, she liked to hunt and stuff like that. The one problem is thta is it very short and they left of when it was getting good. It gives alot of info about Africa in the 15oo's. It's a great book eveb if it is short and it's still worth buying!

She longs to rule and understands her people but no woman has ever ruled her tribe before and her bratty brother who cares nothing for the people is to inherit the throne. She is sent to the Portugese city to try to find some way to stop them from taking her people as slaves. She herself is nearly captured.

The book was really to short to develope the charecters well.
It wasn't great. If you are new to the series do not read this one first.
