Book Description

April 27 2010

Carlos Fuentes doesn't want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him in Boulder, Colorado. He wants to keep living on the edge, and carve his own path—just like Alex did. Unfortunately, his ties to a Mexican gang aren't easy to break, and he soon finds himself being set up by a drug lord.

When Alex arranges for Carlos to live with his former professor and his family to keep him from being sent to jail, Carlos feels completely out of place. He's even more thrown by his strong feelings for the professor's daughter, Kiara, who is nothing like the girls he's usually drawn to. But Carlos and Kiara soon discover that in matters of the heart, the rules of attraction overpower the social differences that conspire to keep them apart.

As the danger grows for Carlos, he's shocked to discover that it's this seemingly All-American family who can save him. But is he willing to endanger their safety for a chance at the kind of life he's never even dreamed possible?

4.0 out of 5 stars Rules of Attraction Sept. 7 2010
Summary: In a sequel to Perfect Chemistry, this time it is Alex's little brother Carlos who is getting into trouble and falling in love. Carlos has been sent back to Colorado to live with Alex after getting into some trouble with gangs in Mexico. But when drugs are found in his locker at school, Carlos is forced to live with Alex's old professor, his family and his quirky daughter.

Review: For those who loved Perfect Chemistry, Rules of Attraction will not disappoint. Elkeles spends more time on character development and expands the cast of supporting characters significantly. This is a much slower moving story, but I appreciated the time to get to know and fall in love with Carlos and Kiara. Elkeles does a great job of keeping some of the elements that readers enjoyed in the previous novel, such as the Alex and Brittney storyline and gang elements, but was able to maintain enough distance, creating new elements, which made this novel completely distinct. The pacing was a little uneven, but overall it was a very enjoyable read and will appeal to a wide audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Addition to the Perfect Chemistry Series! July 19 2010
By Liz M
Last summer I ordered Perfect Chemistry off amazon to bring on vacation with me and was instantly captivated by the story, the characters, the love story, and the way Simone Elkeles wrote. I was addicted to the book and could not put it down. When I came across this book (I didn't know she was making the series a trilogy, but when I found out I couldn't have been happier!) I didn't know if she could do it again. Boy was I wrong!

I didn't know if I was going to like this story because I was so hopelessly in love with Brittany and Alex, but knowing that they were going to be in this story as well pushed me to pick it up. This book focuses on Carlos Fuentes, Alex's little brother. He is forced to move to Colorado against his will to live with Alex. Carlos is resentful that he can't be in Mexico or back in Chicago and knows that his time in Colorado is going to be terrible. That is until he meets Kiara. Kiara Westford is friends with Alex and offers to be Carlos' peer guide at school to help him make his transition easier. Kiara struggles with one thing, her stuttering. She is beginning to get over her speech impediment but something about Carlos makes her nervous and make her begin to stutter again. When Carlos is framed, and found with drugs in his locker he has to move into Kiara's house to avoid juvie.

From then on the the readers are taken on the journey that is Carlos and Kiara's relationship. They both want to deny that they have feelings for each other, especially because Carlos doesn't get emotionally involved, and Kiara can't stand Carlos' ego. Somewhere along the line Kiara and Carlos fall hard for each other, but not without difficulty.

This story is easily one of the best i've read.

RULES OF ATTRACTION, the second novel in the PERFECT CHEMISTRY series, focuses on Carlos Fuentes, the middle child in the Fuentes family.

Even after his older brother, Alex, was jumped out of the Latino Blood so that he would not have to be a part of it, Carlos still wants to run his own life. Not one to be controlled by others or to follow rules, it's hard for Carlos to adjust to his new life, once he is sent to live with Alex. New school, new people... same old Carlos.

Soon after his arrival, Carlos gets wrapped up in the wrong crowd and finds himself in the middle of a drug bust at school. To prevent himself from going to juvie, Carlos must move in with Professor Westford, Alex's old professor and father of Kiara, the annoying good girl who was designated to show Alex around school. Before he knows it, Carlos has to live in a home with two authority figures who both think they can change him - Kiara's annoying little brother pestering him, and Kiara herself, who for some reason he just can't get out of his mind.

Even after the way Carlos first treated her when they met, Kiara really wants what is best for him, even if it means him living with her. It sure doesn't hurt seeing Carlos with his shirt off, but what worries Kiara the most is how he can cause her to stutter and have her heart flutter. Sure, Carlos can be a jerk sometimes, but in his most vulnerable moments, Kiara is able to see his softer, sweeter side. However, getting too close to Carlos can be a risk for total heartbreak, especially when Carlos himself does not want to let anyone close to him.

Before we know it, readers are on a roller coaster ride with Carlos and Kiara.
