C’était sans compter sur la volonté de Charles Binamé, déjà réalisateur du très beau Eldorado. Grâce à un budget et à un casting impressionnants, ce dernier a pu jeter un regard neuf sur ce classique de la culture populaire québécoise, tiré de l’œuvre de Claude-Henri Grignon.
En 1890, à Ste-Adèle, village isolé des Laurentides, Donalda est fougueusement amoureuse du bel Alexis. Mais ce dernier doit partir sur les chantiers. Durant cet éloignement, les difficultés financières du père de la belle l’obligeront à prendre pour époux l’avare et terrible Séraphin.
En tirant assez habilement les ficelles de ce mélodrame mythique par une photographie souvent magnifique et une musique grandiloquente, Charles Binamé propose un voyage dans l’inconscient collectif d’un peuple. Incarnés avec beaucoup de crédibilité par les grands noms de l’industrie cinématographique québécoise (Pierre Lebeau, Roy Dupuis, Karine Vanasse, Rémy Girard et Benoit Brière pour ne citer qu’eux), les personnages d’Un homme et son pêché, qui manquent parfois d’un peu de finesse, sont pourtant à la hauteur de leur légende. Et même si la passion d’un amour impossible est évoquée avec un peu trop de sensiblerie, le film peut compter sur une mise en scène fouillée, un éclairage exaltant la nature et les saisons et de très beaux moments d’intensité tragique pour tout de même réussir son pari. -- Helen Faradji

Tragic love story,

I originally bought this movie (blu-ray) because Roy Dupuis was in it and the man is a god as far as I am concerned in film here in the US or in Canada, where he is very popular. I loved it. I hated it. I cried, laughed, sobbed, smiled, rejoiced, and reached despair with poor, tragic, sweet Donalda. Karine held her own against the incredible Dupuis artistically. Unlike other female cast members that Roy has been opposite, this young woman did a phenomenal job of portraying both the heights of love and the depths of despair. It really is like 'Titanic.' Beware, bring a box of freakin' tissues as you'll need it, but unlike Roy's similar work, Les Filles de Caleb, the leads in this story remain in love for the whole movie. I really felt for Donalda, sweet innocent girl that she was. Circumstance and life separate the two young lovers, but they remain forever each others in heart and spirit. Rarely has a movie moved me to tears, much less to sobs, but this one did. It's well worth the price, even with the heartache. Roy's portrayal of Alexis is just darling. You just want to cuddle him and console him and at the same time completely ravage such a gorgeous man. lol Thanks, Roy and Karine, for bringing to life two such memorable characters. I need to watch J'en Suis to fight back the tears.SPOILER WARNING: It doesn't have a happy ending, not by a long shot, but this movie is still worth every penny, every tear, every ache in your throat and smile in your heart.

A must for Quebec culture. Instant classic. One of the most saddest love stories. It is said to be a true story.
