Description

As the fourth season opens, Hawkeye returns from a 3-day R&R pass in Tokyo to find Trapper has been sent Stateside. Hawkeye races to the airport but arrives just as Trapper’s plane takes off. Too late to tell his friend good-bye, he in nevertheless just in time to welcome Trapper’s replacement, Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. Once Hawkeye gets over his anger and disappointment, he realizes B.J. is a worthy ally and takes the newcomer under his wing. “The first thing you learn here, B.J., is that insanity is no worse than the common cold. You’ve heard of a military post? Ours is a compost. Only the wounded are new. The tedium is relieved only by the boredom. So pitch in, muddle through, pip-pip. Never mind the reason why, ours is but to do and not let ‘em die.”

Then Colonel Sherman T. Potter arrives to take over command of the 4077. Not only are Frank and Hot Lips outraged that Frank has lost his command so quickly, but Hawkeye and B.J. know that a “lifer” Army commander could spell big trouble for them. But then a single reminiscence from Potter puts the docs at ease: “Had a still on Guam in World War II. One night it blew up. That’s how I got my Purple Heart.”

4.0 out of 5 stars MASH is a classic, a MUST have in a respectable collection, Mar 25 2011
This review is from: M.A.S.H. Season Four (Full Screen Collector's Edition) (DVD)
What to add to what has been said about this great serie... I recently watched the whole serie again and I appreciated how it does not get old at all It is out of time : war is like that I suppose, as war is war is war? The horror is the same from from era to the next
Now I ordered season 4 because I could not find it in my collection!! Someone has not returned it.
To be espacialy honest, i must say that i prefer the serie with the second «tete de turc» (sorry I do not know the equivalent in English), the diva from a certain blue blood family... A very snobish diva, an attitude by the way, that is not blue blood at all but more «nouveau riche». I find it less cheap to attack that sort of wealthy and professionaly competent person than that poor incompetent moron... But you see : all that is a matter of personal taste, and has nothing to do with the quality of the production itself. I have not yet found a year that would score less than the others...
Please enjoy and laugh as you learn all kinds of things about war, geography, mentalities, human weaknesses and basic fragility.A great and comic yet humbling serie. Just dont hesitate to buy the 11 CDs.

This review is from: M.A.S.H. Season Four (Full Screen Collector's Edition) (DVD)
I'm one of the die-hards who liked Trapper and Henry better than B.J. and Potter. I suppose that, in my opinion, they were nearer to portraying the insanity of the movie. Potter was more like a real officer than Henry (who was more like the Colonel in the movie) and B.J. lacked the slap-stick of Trapper. Remember, MASH was a stab at the military and was never meant to be taken seriously. Still, this has to rank up there as one of the best series ever produced. Henry Morgan was great, and irreplaceable, in Dragnet; but comes in a distant second to McLean Stevenson (again, this is my opinion) in MASH. Trapper John was such a major part of the movie that it makes no sense to abandon him in the series without so much as a good-bye to Hawkeye (yet they did). Oh well, I'm not a politically-correct person so I guess this shouldn't make sense to me.
