Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of space opera who have been eagerly awaiting this sequel to Weber and White's In Death Ground (1997) won't be disappointed, to put it mildly. Humanity and its various allies find themselves under attack by an enemy with whom no communication, let alone coexistence, is possible, since their foes lack individual sentience and are driven by a Darwinian imperative to regard all other life forms as food sources. Countered against this nightmare are an assortment of diverse species, some unknown to one another, who share the ability to make moral choices, "including the ultimate choice of sacrificing that very individual consciousness in the name of what all of us recognize, in one form or another, for what it is: honor." This capacity is stretched when it is discovered that, in this war, genocide is a tactical weapon. The authors have created a fictional reality with all of the verisimilitude of a technothriller, but this doesn't credit them enough, since unlike, say, Tom Clancy, they have had to create their own weapons, tactics and even societies. Characterizations are strong and vivid, particularly the Human and Orion command team that spearheads the fight and a fighter pilot who's haunted by the ghosts of her dead. Ultimately, Weber and White have written an exposition, in the form of a novel, of Heinlein's axiom that "ethics are a survival mechanism," leaving the reader both exhilarated and enriched. From Library Journal

In the 24th century, the Grand Alliance, made up of four sentient, allied races, finds itself on the losing end of the ongoing war against the Bugs, a hostile race of spacefaring, alien carnivores intent on conquest. In desperate straits, the warriors of the Alliance muster a last-ditch effort to destroy their enemy once and for all regardless of the cost. Coauthors Weber ("Honor Harrington" series) and White (Eagle Against the Stars) excel at large-scale military sf, combining intense scenes of interstellar battle with compelling portraits of men and women locked in interminable war. Along with its series predecessors Insurrection, Crusade, and In Death Ground, this title belongs in most collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars What were those reviewers that didnt give it 5 stars thinkin, Jan 12 2003

This review is from: SHIVA OPTION (Hardcover)
this book was indeed the best Sci-Fi Military style that i have read to date... and i have read many.. Forever Peace (Bleh..), Forever War (YEAH!), War of Honor (YEAH!), In Death Ground (...YEAH!), Halo Fall of Reach (so so... basic beginner Sci-Fi Military), then there is The Shiva Option... a totally different category of its own... this book was [GREAT]! it completely blew me away with those space battles... if u thought In death Ground was good... ur going to get blown away by this sequel... I cant help but wonder... wat was wrong with those other reviewers... this book even has a glossary for all u people who have poor memories and complain bout how many missile and ship types there are... this book is the best though a little long... and though this type of story isnt original, it does put its type to the limits...!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars I think some of the other reviewers are confused, Mar 28 2002

Apparently people are missing the purpose of the book. Of course the conclusion of the book is a forgone conclusion. How else could it end? I mean if you have been following the series then you know that it take place after 'In Death's Ground' and before 'Insurrection.' So how could the Alliance lose?

So why read the book? Because if you have read 'In Deaths Ground' you will want to know how the characters in the books fare. The book is written in order to tie the lose ends. That is they tie up all the lose ends but one. I won't say what it is in case you haven't read the book. You're going to have to find that one out yourself.

One last final thought. I enjoyed this book and I personally think it's worth reading. Just remember it's a book written to fill in a gap in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Study in Predestination, Feb 15 2002

This review is from: SHIVA OPTION (Hardcover)
In this, the sequel to In Death Ground, the Grand Alliance takes its vengeance and eradicates the Bugs from the galaxy. This, of course, is not a spoiler, as it is made abundantly clear in Insurrection (the first published Starfire novel, which takes place last chronologically) that the Bugs are smashed by the Terran Federation and its allies, the Orions, Gorm, and Ophiuchi. We see the Alliance smash Bug hive after Bug hive at grievous cost to itself, and are introduced to the Star Union of Crucis, an interstellar multispecies polity (like the Alliance) that is on the other side of Bug space.

Now, over the course of this novel, we witness a great many space battles, many dwarfing the magnitude of previous battles. Unfortunately, they are rarely detailed as much as previous examples, mostly because there are *so* *many*. In fact, it becomes somewhat repetitive...the warp point assault, followed by the fighter/gunship clash, the gunship/battle line clash, the fighter/battle line clash, and, to end with, the battle line/battle line clash.

To be fair, there's not that much they can do to avoid the repetition; when one is fighting a powerful enemy, you'll have a great many individual battles. They do try to liven it up with ground combat and other options. Also, luck has a way of benefiting the Alliance far more than the Bugs...but, then again, the Alliance does make a lot of its own luck, and the Bugs get some very good luck of their own.

All in all, this is a good book, and I'm not sorry that I bought it. If you're uncomfortable, check out the Baen website, which has the first ten chapters, and see what you think, or wait for paperback.
