Review

"Hobbs wants us to indulge our passion for escape, to bypass those unremarkable 'Kodak moments,' and find the much bigger experience that has staying power." -- National Post

Book Description

"Portable Drama," "Staging Incidents," "Zonal Denial"--master gardener Thomas Hobbs proves to be as creative with words as he is with flowers. This cutting-edge book on innovative garden design shows how freeing up the mind from the bonds of conventional garden design can result in gardens of singular allure. The breathtaking pictures reinvent garden photography, jolting the reader out of any preconceived idea of how a garden should look.

As a garden designer and gardener, this book is inspirational. I am thrilled with the juxtapostions of plants in this book. Great job. I only wish I lived in the Northwest so I can have them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thomas Hobbs is a master maker of gardens, May 21 2006
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Shocking Beauty (Paperback)
Thomas Hobbs is a master maker of gardens, and in SHOCKING BEAUTY he offers his original perspective on garden design through a series of literary, inspiring essays taking examples from exceptional gardens throughout North America and Europe to show how gardens can be inspired rather than arranged. Nature is the best example of how to blend colors and textures to create 'shocking beauty', Hobbs maintains: full-page color photos demonstrate this beauty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vancouver meets California, Sep 2 2009
By Christine Morrell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Shocking Beauty (Paperback)
Thomas Hobbs is a plant color & texture genius. His creative advice is unique - never create a written plan always buy plants & move them around until you find the right location. He admits to design failure but finds creative solutions. He's addicted to risk filling his zone 7-8 garden in Vancouver BC with zone 9-12 plants normally seen in California gardens then digs them up, overwintering indoors & replanting in the spring - he has far more energy & nursery staff than the rest of us. But the book is gorgeous & an inspirering read.
