This first chapter of what is (hopefully) a three book story arc centers on the fragmentation of american society after a limited nuclear exchange. It centers on main character Ted Quantrill and his journey from boy scout to government assasin. His natural reflexes make him a deadly weapon, a very useful weapon in a land struggling to hold onto the fragile shards of its civilization. The book has a great futuristic, yet plausible old west feel about it and leads quite nicely into the followup book "Wild Country". Packed with action and interesting characters (including a boar the size of a rhino named Baal)this book is one of my alltime favorites even if it is unknown by most readers of mainstream sci fi. I highly recommend it and the second part "Wild Country" Here's hoping Mr. Ing decides to pick up this storyline again and finish it soon, I've been drooling for the third book for years! He even teases us with a brief outline of upcoming events at the end of "Wild Country". Don't be put off though, these books are very satisfying in themselves. It is intended as a compliment to say they left me wanting just a little bit more!
