5.0 out of 5 stars Great place to start Mar 25 2003
Format:Paperback
This book is great, it was the first book I read on BDSM and I couldn't put it down. It revealed a world I'm curious in very well. It was easy to understand and fun to read. Jay gives you new leads to head to after reading the book. I felt a good understanding after reading it and my friend was amazed on well I could use terms after reading. This is book you should have if just learning and even as reference. I know I'll be consulting this book for notes as well as leads and contact info.

SM 101 contains all the essential information that BDSM beginners desperately need, written in a way that newcomers can understand. Though the introductory chapter says it isn't intended for people who are already members of SM community, I would argue that this is an excellent guide even for people with years of experience. I have been a member of several BDSM organizations over seven years, and I found this book to be thought-provoking and helpful. This book has provided me with information and advice that is more honest (and more accurate, I think) than much of what I have gotten from years of workshops, lectures, and demonstrations.

I think the primary advantage of this book over others on the subject is its depth. Its introduction to the basics of BDSM is particularly thorough. Personal anecdotes, both amusing and poignant, give real-life insight into what it's like to play with BDSM. It has a strong emphasis on safety without being pushy or patronizing. Most books just recite arbitrary rules. SM 101 gives information, suggestions, and advice designed to help readers make their own decisions about the risks they want to take.

One of my favorite parts of this book is a collection of off-handed remarks overheard at BDSM events. These quotes, scattered in margins of the pages, range from clever to hilarious to profound. Another nice touch is advice on finding partners, and a step-by-step guide to negotiating SM play. There are even negotiation forms that can be copied and used to make sure that all the points are covered. I strongly recommend the safety precautions this book suggests for playing with someone new.

All in all, SM 101 is a book I would highly recommend to anyone who is seriously considering exploring safe, sane and consensual BDSM.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read it - because every "newbie" should.... Aug 7 2001

SM 101 is an excellent overview of what (and almost as importantly) what *not* to do as you pursue an interest in the BDSM field of experience. As a novice to this exciting and often-overwhelming community of people and my own inner feelings, I knew I needed a "guide" to get me through the start.

I found that guide in Wiseman's SM 101. He presents the basics: definitions, safety, suggestions, more safety, tantallizing tidbits of things to try, and safety. As a newcomer, I was daunted by the idea of pursuing something so inherently dangerous in a relatively sane manner.

I found out how to approach my new interests by reading SM 101. While a bit dry - Wiseman does stay focused on "giving you the goods" (and a little bit of safety) - he still manages to convey a great deal of information in a relatively short volume.

The best part of the book for me were the "quotes" on each page - little phrases or comments quoted from people in the BDSM scene - and these gave me the insight into the emotional/sensual side of this new venue I was checking out. Wiseman's insights have made me safe while I try to explore something not-so-acceptable in today's society, and comfortable that I'm doing the right thing.

I recommend this book for every "newbie" - whether you read it cover to cover (as I did) or pay close attention to chapters that cover what you specifically want to explore.

If it doesn't save your life, it will at the least make you more comfortable living it.
