Product Description

From Amazon

SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide is divided equally into a database administrator's manual and a developer's primer, providing useful content for readers who are interested in both angles.

The book opens with overviews of the SQL Server database architecture and the new features of version 7. The management and security aspects of the all-important Enterprise Manager are covered in depth. The authors make very liberal use of screen shots and information tables, lending a visual look to this introduction. The first part continues with sections on replication, data warehousing, performance optimisation, and SQL-DMO--the object-oriented framework that lets you write your own management applications.

Part 2 opens with a traditional look at databases and a focus on the relational model. After introducing you to entity-relationship diagrams and a rather detailed tutorial of the SQL language, the authors present each of the various ways to access SQL Server from client applications: Microsoft Access front ends, data access objects (DAO), Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC)Direct, the ODBC API, Remote Data Objects, object linking and embedding database (OLE DB), ActiveX Data Objects, and DB-Library. The last chapter discusses Active Server Pages (ASP) development and how to integrate SQL Server databases with Web sites.

A companion CD-ROM contains all of the example code in the book and offers a centralised interface for running it. --Stephen W Plain

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best written SQL Server 7 books I've read, Dec 11 2000
By
This review is from: SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide (Paperback)
There are a number of good SQL Server 7 books around, but this is one of the best. The writing is very clear and does a good job of covering the range from basics to more advanced issues. There's lots of well-written VB and T-SQL code to illustrate "best practices". It's one of the few books for developers that doesn't ignore important administrative issues, especially the difficuly security questions.

I would highly recommend this as one of the "standard references" for a SQL Server developer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great information, but poor index makes it a poor reference., Sep 26 2000
This review is from: SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book mainly as a reference, and for the most part it fills that role quite well. It has provided me with all the basic and detailed information that I need to design and manage the simple databases that I use. One big problem with the book, though, is its lousy index. It's nearly useless. That is a big minus for a reference book. On many occasions, I've needed a quick answer on a subject, only to find that subject not listed in the index. For instance, just now I wanted to know the sizes of the various data types. I searched for "data types" in the index and found nothing. I tried "integer" and found nothing. Finally, after browsing through the table of contents and several chapters of text, I found a great table, (starting on page 405), that gave me exactly the information I needed. Why wasn't this table in the index under data types? Because it is not, a search that should have taken me several seconds took me several minutes. I would rate this book a five if the index were worth more than the paper it's printed on. As it is, however, it rates a three for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for SQL Server 7 developers, April 8 2000
This review is from: SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book covers nearly every aspect of SQL Server 7 that could be relevant to the developer. Sections on SQL Server's architecture and administration, backup, security, replication, and other DBA aspects, comprise the first part of the book. The remainder of the book is geared towards the development aspect, rather than the administrative aspect. The section on T-SQL is very good. There are many illustrations and examples throughout the book and the language is easy to read.

While there are books out there, many of them excellent, that concentrate on the adminstration of SQL Server to the exclusion of development and others that are directed only at developers, this book is geared to the developer that needs to dabble in administration from time to time. This is what makes this book unique and an important addition to any SQL Server 7 developer's library.
