Product Description

Review

"The Sacred Balance is both vintage Suzuki and the new, improved 2008 model. The book should read like a re-tread given the sudden climate change concern crazy and the proliferation of bloggers and politicians jumping on the bullet-train bandwagon. Yet, Suzuki's book makes his own perspective sound fresh, inventive, original and -- gasp! -- actually readable! Seriously." (CD Syndicated 20071006)

"This 10-year edition of Suzuki's landmark bestseller has been extensively revised, taking into account the past decade's sweeping environmental changes and advances in science." (Globe & Mail 20080910)

"The Sacred Balance is most impressive for the masterful way Suzuki blends hard, cold scientific data with a much more holistic understanding of how we human animals are more than just the sum of our natural parts. This perspective is clear from the get go...As Suzuki speaks to our hearts and our minds, he inspires us to renew our interest in nature's wonders, return our very natural bodies to their proper place in the natural cycle, and restore the natural balance on Earth that we have disrupted. And that is the message we should take to heart." (Sustainablog )

Book Description

This special 10th-anniversary edition reexamines our place in the natural world in light of sweeping environmental changes and recent advances in scientific knowledge.

Since The Sacred Balance was first published in 1997 global warming has become a major issue, with alarming effects being observed on all continents and in the world's oceans. Scientists have also made significant discoveries in various realms, including the state of world ecosystems, the science behind the mother/baby interaction, and the workings of the brain.

In this new and extensively revised and amplified edition of his bestselling book, David Suzuki reflects on these changes and examines what they mean for our place in the world. His basic message remains the same: we are creatures of the Earth, utterly dependent on its elements, which are not just external factors, but incorporated into our very essence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extensive notes and an index round out this powerful treatise, Dec 1 2007
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sacred Balance (Paperback)
Now in an updated and expanded edition ten years after its initial publication, The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place in Nature remains a monumental testimony concerning the repercussions of human society's impact on the natural world, both for the planet and the people living on it. Geneticist and environmentalist David Suzuki reveals how connected and dependent humankind is upon the planet's water, soil, sunlight, and the breath of its vegetation; as well as the threats to the planet's balance ranging from toxic pollution to the impending cataclysm of global warming. Extensive notes and an index round out this powerful treatise concerning the immediate need to rethink human behavior and find a new way to live in balance with the planet's ecosystem. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant!! Should be required reading., Aug 16 2008
By Jeff Schulte - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sacred Balance (Paperback)
I only recently stumbled upon this book, so I can't compare it to its previous incarnation. This book is a pleasure to read. It is well researched and includes a wide variety of quotes from literature and science alike. While providing the most coherent "Land Ethic" I've read (better than Wendell Berry and Leopold), it also provides a basic scientific primer for the natural processes of the world.
You will learn from this book, how to live in this world and why you should. But as importantly, it will also provide you a glimpse into other sources to learn more.
