It took more than 25 years for another Clive Cussler novel to come to the screen after the financial and critical disaster of Raise the Titanic. Based on Cussler's oddly landlocked adventure, Sahara finds the author's hero, Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey)--a sort of all-American, high seas variation of James Bond--in Africa looking for a Confederate ironclad ship that impossibly might have ended up there. Soon he and his faithful sidekick Al Giordino (Steve Zahn) are lost in another adventure, discovering a deadly contaminate being tracked by a beautiful doctor (Penelope Cruz). The results are checkered: there's no one outstanding sequence, but the action is enjoyably varied, while the thrills are mild yet not bombastic or gratuitous. The cast are all adept in their roles, yet the only one who sparkles is the scene-stealing Zahn, cast against type; McConaughey, who also produced, knows he might be starting a franchise character and plays it safe. He's never as dangerous as Cussler's hero is on the page (except in his introduction), and in fact, the whole movie plays towards comedy, infused by a soundtrack of 70s FM radio monsters. Cussler fanatics may not like this lighter fare, especially with the archeological portion (a Cussler strong point) not fully embraced, but with a very, very likable cast and colorful settings, Sahara is a kindler, gentler action film that has all the elements in place for a better, more memorable franchise if anyone cares to attempt it. --Doug Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate portrayal of the Tuareg and the adventure of a lifetime, July 30 2010
This review is from: Sahara (Widescreen) (DVD)
I was reluctant to watch the "Sahara" thinking it a Hollywood misadventure but after having reviewed the film, I am glad I gave this Matthew McConaughey adventure a chance! The Sahara is a family fun adventure that both children and adults alike will revel in. It is a concept familiar to most - a corporation run by a corrupt British official threatens the lives of the Tuareg (distinct ethnic group native to North Africa). It is up to McConaughey, his friends and a Wealth Health Organization doctor played by Cruz to help the Tuareg defeat this organization. The leader of the Tuaregs, many times defeated, is in no mood to outwit the British (who is being aided by non-Tuareg Malian officials). McConaughey and crew provide the optimism he needs to defeat the man-made illnesses, caused by the mining corporation, that plague his people (for which there is no cure).

Throughout the film, the pacing is excellent. Like a mystery, the clues unravel slowly but surely and the unlikeliest of people are made heroes along the way. I wish not to disclose details of the storyline but there is great adventure, and fun to be had by this film. The dialogue is humorous and witty. The actors perform splendidly and convincingly in their roles. It also sheds light on the plight of the Tuareg in Africa (an ethnic group largely unknown to most people around the world because their suffering is not disclosed by mainstream media). This film deserved far more praised than it ever received and I invite everyone to enjoy this adventure and the laughs along the way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Dec 12 2008

Sahara follows the quest of lifelong friends and marine salvage experts Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) and Al Giordino (Steve Zahn) as they search for evidence in Africa of an iron-clad battleship that disappeared during the Civil War. During their adventure, they cross paths with a scientist (Penelope Cruz) who is investigating a mysterious plague that is killing the populace of Mali.

McConaughey (who also co-produced the film) is perfectly cast as the roguish and resourceful explorer, while Cruz is convincing as the doctor; Zahn is a little too goofy for his character, but still manages to play the role with charm. It is interesting to note that the ruthless but incompetent villains are Africans of Third World nations, who are rapidly becoming Hollywood's new antagonists of choice.

The location photography is impressive and fresh. Unfortunately, the rock soundtrack tries to make the film hipper than it is, and only serves to detract from the events on screen.

Based on the novel by Clive Cussler, the story is unpredictable and has no gaping holes. There are several exciting chase sequences, plenty of gunplay, and believable stunts. Though Cussler is apparently suing the makers for "ruining" his book -- you'd think he would have learned his lesson about Hollywood adaptations after the debacle that was Raise the Titanic -- his concern is unwarranted.

Sahara is a strong and entertaining film that is worthy of a franchise. Rating: 7 out of 10.
