Product Description

From Library Journal

Main and her husband, Alec, put their jobs on hold for three years, bought a 33' catamaran and followed his dream of sailing around the world. Some 32,000 miles later, they had survived terrible storms at sea, eaten strange and exotic foods, encountered menacing sailors (pirates?), and become part of an amorphous community of waterborne adventurers. But the oceangoing life often frightens Main and tests her marriage. In fact, the first half of the book focuses primarily on her unhappiness with her own self-doubts, her husband for not being more sympathetic, and her general loneliness. By the second half of the book (and journey), she has come to terms with herself and her husband, and the places they visit and people they meet take center stage. The reader finally begins to feel the joy of exploring the world. Part travel chronicle, part self-exploration, and not entirely satisfactory on either account, this book is only for the most complete of public library adventure collections.ALinda M. Book Description

Will You Marry Me... And Sail Around the World? Alayne Main was 28 years old with an exciting medical career and minimal sailing experience, but she lived up to her sailing promise. She and her husband quit their jobs, bought a 33-foot catamaran and blithely sailed away! The challenges were immense - storms at sea, a collision with a whale and the threat of pirates - but her greatest challenge was the emotional turmoil their adventurous and uncertain lifestyle created. Her relationship deteriorating, Alayne was forced to deal with her fear and understand what drove her to continue to sail across vast unpredictable oceans - with only her husband to turn to. After four years, they came home as circumnavigators - and still married. An honest, deeply moving and wonderfully woven tale of a young woman's journeys - into herself, her marriage and around the world. Anyone in a partnership - man or woman, sailor or not - will benefit from this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars As real as it gets (Kamloops, BC Canada), Jan 16 2011
This review is from: Sailing promise: Around the world on a catamaran (Paperback)
I find this book very interesting from many points of view. However, if you are looking for a detailed prescription for a successful circumnavigation, you will not find it here. On the other hand, there so much information given that I could work out my own to-do list and by taking a similar approach probably accomplish the same. I always find something new when going back to this book. In my opinion, this is incredibly uplifting and inspirational book, but you have to search for it and inspire yourself not to expect inspiration from the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sailing Promise, July 29 2005
By
This review is from: Sailing promise: Around the world on a catamaran (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I am fearful of water and I found Alaynes determination very inspiring. Not only did she have to deal with her fear of the unknown, but her husband was no help when her fears were at their worst!

This lady showed great courage by continuing with the trip and constantly working on her fears and keeping her marriage afloat. Hats off to Alayne! Thank you the book was inspirational to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars How dreams translate into reality, Nov 7 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sailing promise: Around the world on a catamaran (Paperback)
This book shows you how the determination, the comitment, the patience and the good faith of two people made happen a dream that almost anyone had dreamed at least once in a lifetime. The critics may be right about the artistic value of this book, which is far from being outstanding, but nevertheless it is a delicious and healthy treat for and from a good, honest, hart. I am more enthousiastic about books describing reality in simple, common sense terms, than about artistic books with poisonous content, like we have too many arround these days!...
