Book Description

June 1 2009
This thoroughly updated and comprehensive new edition enhances the well-loved and often-used earlier work as a guide to symbolism in Christian liturgical art, architecture, manuscripts, stained glass, and more. The new book is more heavily pictorial in an effort to provide an even stronger resource for artists and researchers, as well as the general browsing public. It addresses the rich history of Christian symbolism, presented for the twenty-first century reader. This unique resource offers page after page of line drawings depicting sacred monograms, saints, crosses, altars, flowers, fruits and trees, plus symbols of the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, the Church Year, the Apostles, the Holy Trinity; and much more. Completely updated and with ecumenical appeal, this useful new reference book expands on its earlier and well-earned reputation for providing clear and reliable information on Christian symbolism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice short guide to Christian symbolism Sept. 26 2009
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great short reference guide to the symbols found in Christian art. Many of us aren't familiar with the meanings attacted to deer, strawberries, and daisies, so it's easy to miss the messages put into Christian images, which were meant to be perfectly plain to everyone. Each entry is illustrated with lovely line drawings, and usually there's a short explanation. The authors don't delve deeply into the history and provenance of each item, which makes it a quick, simple, and helpful reference. I enjoyed reading it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of Christian "graffiti" Jan. 3 2013
By Christopher Armstrong-Stevenson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not all graffiti is ugly and property destroying...in early Christian times it was used to mark "safe-houses" and to provide a way of communicating with other like-minded people during times of persecution by non-Christians. Contemporary signs and symbols largely expand upon the early base of symbolism and now largely provide a not-so-secret announcement of one's beliefs. The drawings are simplistic...almost child-like, and off-putting to adults. However the text explaining why certain symbols refer to specific saints is useful. Also useful are the historic developments of some of the signs and symbols in contemporary usage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent high-level over-view of Christian Iconography and Saints Nov. 28 2011
By shadowphoto - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book, while I'm sure very well intentioned by the authors, is severely lacking in detail; it is really best suited as a children's work and not for serious study. It provides good, general, very high-level information but fails to give any significant detail. It also maintains a very casual tone not suited to its subject matter--it mentions, matter-of-factly "Bill O'Reilly" and the history of the "Peace sign" in `did you know...?' sections. These appear to have been added just to fill in space and make the book larger than it really is since they have no relation to the rest of the information in the book.

I found this book to be very informative. Not only for the symbols and signs but for the history of colour used, etc.
