Excellent hardware, nightmare software,

This review is from: Saitek Pro PZ44 Flight Yoke with Three-Lever Throttle (Personal Computers)
I'm running MS Flight Simulator 9.1 on XP SP3 (32 bit). I bought the Saitek yoke and quadrant set because I was sick and tired of my poorly made CH yoke with its perpetually sticking control shaft. This has been a problem with CH yokes for years, as you'll see if you search the web.So I was hoping for better hardware. Did I get that? Yes. The Saitek feels much more solid than CH, and entire design and assembly is much more finished and professional. Yoke action is smooth and precise. The software's another story. The Saitek CD refused to load, no matter what I tried. After several attempts and lots of CD drive noise, got an error message: "Setup.exe is not a Win 32 application." Oh, really? Obviously corrupted, even though brand new. Ok, so I figured I'd download the software from the Saitek site. The download hung up three times (the last time with download 99.98% complete), with an error message: "500 Invalid Port Command; Cannot download this file." In 25 years of downloading files, I've NEVER had this happen. By manually resetting the download three times, finally got the whole thing in one piece. Phew! Ok... Loaded it, went through Saitek's unnecessarily complicated and unintuitive setup program. Went to use it, quickly found that even though the Y Rotation lever on the quadrant was assigned (and successfully tested) to Engine Mixture, it didn't work in FS9. Other people have had this same problem. Only cure seems to be to set it up with FSUIPC (for additional money). In use, I also found that while flying, the view would spontaneously change, in completely unpredictable ways. Totally useless. Others have also had this problem. Use the Saitek disk as a frisbee. So, short story - unless you've got LOTS of time to waste (I guess I do) stay away from the software. It's a disgrace. Maybe it works well in FSX, and the FS9 version was just an afterthought. I don't know. Instead, just use FS9's built-in controller setting assignment feature, and everything will work properly, except for the Y Rotation issue. I haven't had a chance to see if FSUIPC fixes this. Maybe if Saitek agrees to pay for it and reimburse me for my time. As Flight Sim gamers, unless we go VERY high end, the only choices we have for controllers are CH and Saitek. These issues with CH's hardware and Saitek's software have been going on for years, and yet both companies do nothing. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if CH provided the software, and Saitek the hardware?

This review is from: Saitek Pro PZ44 Flight Yoke with Three-Lever Throttle (Personal Computers)
Although this yoke system aesthetically pleasing, and also seems sturdy enough to do the job, it doesn't perform at all to give a realistic feeling of real aircraft controls.First, the centering springs on the roll axis and the pitch axis are way too strong in the center position. It is therefore impossible to smoothly move the controls exactly where it is most important for them to be smooth, right in the center position ! Secondly, the most incredibly ridiculous design decision by Saitek; they integrated a software deadzone right in the center position of both axis, that cannot be removed in any way. Even using their software tuning program, when you adjust the deadzone to zero, the signal sent to the flight sim still contains the deadzone. This results in extremely sloppy feel of the controls, because they are un-responsive for the first + - 5 degrees of rotation of the roll axis, and for the first + - 8mm of movement on the pitch axis. It is absolutely impossible to make smooth approaches with that crap, and even just flying around looks like you're drunk at the controls. As everyone on the web seems to rave about the fact that this yoke has a metal tube, instead of plastic as the sliding element, it is still rough and somewhat jerky because the tube slides simply in hard plastic bushings, and on top of that, they have a sloppy fit. The last thing I want to mention is that the additional lever knobs that are supposed to be included for the throttle quadrant, are not there ! So, don't waste any money on this piece of crap, it's not worth it. To back-up my comments here, let me say that I fly REAL airplanes, and I DO know how controls are supposed to feel like.
