In the mid-1800s the Shogunate that had ruled Japan for hundreds of years was beginning to decline, for the most part because it had isolated itself from the rest of the world to such an extent that a lone American ship shooting off a couple of cannons could be used to ramrod anything the US wanted out of Japan. While isolation can keep traditions alive, it can also cause an inbreeding of technology and ideas that lead to stagnation. As the Shogunate continues to cling to power it uses any means necessary to stop dissent, including murder, oppression, rape, and imprisonment. Standing against this political evil are the Samurai Guns, a mysterious group of warriors who embrace the future, even down the fact that they use pistols instead of swords to do their fighting. Ichimatsu is its most brillant operative, even though he has grown tired of killing, even if they are evildoers. But he always ends up on the missions his contact gives him. He's not alone. There are also two other Guns, Daimon and Kurenai, who help him out. They are kinda like pre-superheroes because of the fact that during the day they hold regular jobs but when called upon, they don their costumes and go out to play with serial killers, and psychotic minions of the Shogunate, which has formed its own "Anti-Samurai Gun Squads" to hunt down and destroy the Samurai Guns.
I enjoyed the "feel" of this show for creating a spaghetti western like atmosphere, even down to the Clint Eastwood-like Ichimatsu and the musical score taken from Ennio Morricone. But it's a little too early to see how good this show is going to be. The animation is a little crude but I think this is more to give it a particular look instead of being cheap. The characters are pretty interesting, except for the bad guys, who are one dimensional raving maniacs so far. Some of the guns, if not all of them, were not even dreamed about in the time period in which this anime takes place, but hey, this isn't historical realism! Samurai Gun is off to a promising start but has a lot of room to improve.
