Book Description

Sep 24 2010
Authentic. Original. Inimitable. Mary Majka is one of Canada’s great pioneering environmentalists. She is best known as a television host, a conservationist, and a driving force behind the internationally acclaimed Marys Point Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve on the Bay of Fundy. Sanctuary gives full expression to the intensely personal story of Mary’s life. A daughter of privilege, a survivor of World War II Poland, an architect of dreams, Mary Majka became a passionate environmentalist intent on protecting fragile spaces and species for generations to come. In this amazing story of determination and foresight, Deborah Carr reveals a complex, indomitable, thoroughly human being — flawed yet feisty, inspiring and inspired.

Review

“Deborah Carr’s fabulous biography of the courageous life of one of Canada’s great pioneering environmentalists goes a long way in demonstrating what a single individual can attain through the power of observation, understanding, and the application of findings to move decision-makers and governments on matters of environmental conservation and protection . . . The book is a must-read for everyone, a work that cannot fail to educate, inspire and ignite all of us!” — David Nettleship (20130114)

“Read this book for entertainment, for inspiration and for truth about what it means to be fully human.” — Joan Czapalay, Director, Nature Canada (20130114)

“This important biography is an intelligent and unvarnished tribute to a life well-lived.” — Laurie Glenn Norris, The Telegraph-Journal (20130114)

Review

“Naturalist, educator, writer, and community activist, Mary Majka has done more to preserve the natural and cultural legacy of the Bay of Fundy than anyone in our time. Sanctuary is an engaging and clear-eyed portrait of her indomitable spirit — a celebration of a courageous life — and an important book.” — Harry Thurston, author of Tidal Life (20120507)

I consider myself an outdoor enthusiast. I always thought I had a full appreciation for nature, however, this book has taught me more. Mary Majka's story written by Deborah Carr is very well written. The language used by the author truly delivers the beauty of nature and Mary's passion for all that is living and breathing. This story will lighten your heart, and bring out your compassion for all that has life. It also highlights some of southeastern New-Brunswick's history and beauty.
Loved reading this.

This book will appeal to a wide range of people. It is a page turner and is beautifully written. Mary Majka is an inspiration to all whose lives she touched and there were many. She is passionate about people, nature and preserving heritage and her impact on all of these is immeasurable. She overcame great personal sorrow in her youth, survived a concentration camp and came to Canada to forge a new life with her husband. When she first visited a tiny cottage in Caledonia Mountain overlooking the beautiful Bay of Fundy, it was love at first sight and it soon became her very own little piece of paradise.

Her story is captivating. This is a woman who lives life to the fullest and it was a joy for me to read her story. I hope that some day high schools will add this book to their curriculum so that young canadians can get acquainted with this great Canadian role model.

This book illuminates the adventures of one of Canada's most unique women. Rich in detail, family photos and personal quotations, it provides an honest description of an exceptional person, her family and her journey from pre-war Poland, through post-war Austria to rural New Brunswick.
As a person who has known Mary and her family since the early 70s, I think the author has done a great job in telling her story. It is a story that has interest on many levels e.g. life in Central Europe, the experience of immigrants to Canada, the early days of conservation activism in the Maritimes.

This book will be an inspiration to teachers and lovers of nature and heritage.
