Gr. 2-4. Beach buffs, horse lovers, and fantasy fans will enjoy this light, fantastical story about a horse drawn in beach sand that comes to life. Polly fervently wishes that the horse she's drawn could run free. Sun, sea, and beach agree to give Polly her wish, and little by little Sandmare changes. Although Polly's wish sets the story in motion, Sandmare is the story's focus. Readers will follow the horse's dream to fly and her struggles to free herself from the beach and deal with suggestions of merry-go-round horses that she returns to the sea. With the aid of a plastic gorilla, a rocking horse whose moods swing from kind to nasty as he rocks, and a toy horse on wheels that gives Sandmare a rolling start, the beach horse eventually escapes the bonds of earth. The slightly disturbing disintegration of her sandy outline is balanced by the explanation that she becomes part of a lovely cloud, a "mare's tail cloud" in the sky. Dewan's textured black-and-white artwork visualizes the fantasy. Diane FooteCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
