From AudioFile

"Arabia will tear your heart out," an elderly statesman tells Rose Chetwynd, "then show you who you really are." The young bride learns the truth of these words almost immediately and ponders them throughout this historical romance of British colonialism and Islamic revolt. Sian Thomas performs the body of the narration with graceful fluidity of timing and subtle modulation of tone. Her portrayal of Rose begins with youthful innocence and ages imperceptibly with the character as she becomes a believable 50-ish author of substance. However, Hassan, Rose's main love interest, turns almost comical with Thomas's attempts to invoke both male vocal characteristics and an Arabic accent. Too bad, since Knox-Mawer's writing of him provides a believable and complex character to work with. 4.0 out of 5 stars A Great, Interesting Book! Feb. 3 2006
By A Customer
I debated whether or not this book was worth 3 stars or 4 stars, I ended up choosing 4 stars. I really loved this book! The story stayed with me long after I finished reading, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I generally don't like these forbidden romance stories, but i guess i was in the mood. so here's the plot, don't worry i won't spoil it for you:
Rose, a naive, eighteen-year-old bride, finds herself headed to Arabia with her husband Geoffrey. She is full of hope of her new life in Aden. In Aden, she makes new friends, including Hassan, the Emir of Jehal, who is handsome, kind, exotic and passionate. When Rose learns the truth about her husband, and the real reason her married her, she turns to Hassan. And of course they fall madly in love. But with the threat of war, they must eventually make a decision that will effect their lives forever.
This book wasn't like most romance stories, it wasn't only about the sex. Issues such as the British control over Arabia often comes up. This was a fantastic story surrounding an extremely likeable character.

I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. Rose travels out to Aden to be married off to a stranger. The British expat society is small and some of the women are getting food sent out from Fortnum and Mason.

Rose prefers to try the local food and as her new husband Geoffrey becomes an enigma, who just wanted a wife for respectability, she finds herself more drawn to a dashing local man.

The times are turbulent and with little else for women to do, they gossip, make friends, watch one another, have discreet affairs and worry about world events. But an affair with a local man - that would never do, even if he is handsome!

Great fun and well described, I really felt as if I was in the desert.
