This movie was the biggest dissappointment of the early 90's! In an attempt to make it relevant to western viewers, the film makers completely changed the story, the music, and the over-all tone of this important piece of theater. Whoopi, of all people!? Give me a break! She was horrible. And why would you change the most beautiful and powerful South African Township music to sound like African American gospel music? It just didn't work for me at all. If you've only seen the movie version and never had the opportunity to experience Sarafina on stage, you probably won't be able to understand where I'm coming from. Having been blessed with seeing it twice as it toured the country, I can say with out a doubt that the movie version failed miserably where the stage play soared to the highest heights!

I think all who have seen Sarafina agree it is a powerful movie. What's more, it's beautiful at the same time. Listen to the voices of the choir in this movie. Sarafina started as a musical, and that talent is prevalent in the film version as well. The accapellas are spectacular, and the choir sings in South African fashion. It gives me a chill.
I enjoyed seeing Whoopi Goldberg in a dramatic role, versus the comedy shtick she usally does.
Lastly, tt's interesting seeing the conditions that apartheid era blacks lived in South Africa. Thank goodness apartheid is over. I'm glad what we see in this movie is now history!

This movie is excellent. It's about a young girl, her taecher, and her friends during the apartheid (separation of blacks and whites that ended in the 1980's.) This movie is showing everything from the prisons to the houses.

This movie takes you on such an emotional journey. It's difficult not to become drawn into this film because of its powerful story and characters. It's an awesome story of determination. Not to mention, it's a histrically significant film as well. Anyone interested in stories of social justice should see this film. The characters are extra ordinary and the stories will take you places you'll never have to experience in real life. It's a great movie to watch, but bring tissue!

I first stumbled across this viodeo in a library in London. I have watched it time and time again. Its content are not fiction but reflections on the past lives of South African Blacks and their struggle for survival and liberation under the white apartheid regime.
If I were Black South African, I would have died alongside those freedom fighters who are not here today. This video can make you to shed tears whether you are white or black.
Injustice and maltreatment of human by fellow human can be counter productive. Watch Sarafina, own your copy and pay attention to Africa's continuous problems. Its about time the imparialists and colonialist feel guilty and sorry for their sins,
God bless Africa.
