Product Description

Product Description

Cotton Pickens made it through fifth grade. That and a tin star were good enough to make him the sheriff in the boomtown of Doubtful, Wyoming. And Doubtful's name is no accident. The saying around town is, If you're a lawman, it's doubtful you'll last a day. Spoiled, brash King Bragg is going to hang for the murder of three men in a barroom. But King's arrogant father - and his beautiful sister - use their powers of persuasion to convince Cotton to look into the shooting. And when Cotton does, he uncovers some disturbing secrets about one Crayfish Ruble, the second biggest rancher in Puma County. Soon, Cotton is surrounded by some people who want to hang King now, some who want to bust him free, and some too busy keeping their stories straight...In a town full of fools and sinners, of men bad and downright evil, a gallows is going up and time is running out. And a young, skinny, undereducated lawman named Cotton Pickens is standing up to a savage storm - with only one gun on his side...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Drama, Oct 16 2010
By Richard S. Wheeler - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Savage Guns A Cotton Pickens Western (Mass Market Paperback)
This is powerful stuff. It mixes tense drama, revolving about the forthcoming hanging of a young cowboy who may be innocent, with moments of wild humor. It is also richly written, with the real West evident on every page. And the characters are remarkable. Johnstone makes everyone in the story fascinating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, Jan 18 2011
By Russ Imler - Published on Amazon.com

Easily the worst book I've ever read with JA Johnstone's name on it; maybe even the worst western book I've ever read, period. There is no real story here. Instead, there's a bunch of characters (including a horse with more human traits than some of the main antagonists) that have little to do until it's time for them to reveal one more clue to our doofus hero. It's like the author put together a brief character description for each person, a brief list of clues to lead the hero to the culmination, and then tried to flesh out a 300 page book around these few short paragraphs. No interesting or believable characters, and no story. You'll find yourself wondering why you wasted you time and your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dumb Humor, July 7 2011
By DAVE - Published on Amazon.com
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The author wanted to make a comedy by using dumb character names like Cotton Pickens. He forgot that a book is to entertain not to show how to write incomplete characters and story plot.
