Book Description

Feb 15 2010
The saxophone is arguably the most iconic of all instruments, but with its graceful form and soulful tone it’s easy to forget that it’s still a machine. It’s a complicated machine, too, and even a slight fault in the mechanism can affect the way it feels and plays. This innovative manual explains clearly and simply how the mechanism functions and what can be done to maintain it, as well as to improve its performance with professional set-up techniques, with few or no specialist tools. This manual is essential reading for everyone who plays the saxophone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sax manual Dec 2 2012
By John
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you have a horn, a budget for repairs and tune ups, a trusted professional technician and no interest at all in things mechanical, you don't need this book. However, if you are like most sax payers, you will appreciate having bought it. It contains very useful information about this complex instrument and how it works mechanically and harmonically. The book starts with fundamental information and takes you to beyond hat many people would attempt to try on their own. It won't make you a tech, but you will gain an understanding of what techs do and it will show you how to do the regular maintenence and less adjustments yourself. I have no regrets buying this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saxophone Manual Aug 28 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love this manual. For too long I have just played my saxophones, kept a few spare pads in my case and crossed my fingers. My saxophones have never really let me down. However, like a car owner who doesn't know what a piston is, I have often been embarrassed by what I don't know about the instrument I spend so much time with.
This book deconstructs the saxophone so you can see just why it is constructed the way it is. It then goes through what to look out in buying a sax, general care, maintenance and a troubleshooting section.
Haynes (the publisher) is renowned for detailed maintenance books on specific cars. I always had one handy years ago when I did more work on my car. It is therefore a delight to see them moving out to other areas. Author Stephen Howard writes clearly and makes easy going of what could potentially be confusing descriptions. This book works for every sax player, from beginner to professional.
