Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Under the Quick ( Surrender ) pseudonym, veteran romance novelist Jayne Ann Krentz (see review of Silver Linings below) offers a tale of Regency England that, while deftly handled with touches of humor, is more notable for its darker side: the hero and heroine rescue each other from past injuries while challenging each other for control within their relationship. Emily Faringdon, a 24-year-old spinster, adores a man she has never met: Simon Traherne, her favorite correspondent on her favorite subject, romantic poetry. When Simon attends a meeting of Emily's local literary society, he indeed seems to be "the man of her dreams," a handsome earl apparently willing to overlook the scandal in her past--a thwarted elopement. But Simon is interested in her mostly as an instrument for revenge: he blames Emily's father for his own father's ruin and suicide 23 years before. Since then, Simon has plotted to destroy the Faringdons. A romantic with a strong pragmatic streak, Emily persuades Simon that marrying her enhances his possibilities for gaining revenge and she then begins her own campaign to win his affection and free him from the past that has poisoned his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scandal, July 18 2004

This is actually one of my favorites by Amanda Quick. It is witty and funny. I thought the manipulative and powerful character of Simon made a perfect contrast to the sweet, seeming naivety of Emily. I found both characters likeable and I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. I've read it three times now and I've loved it each time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold, April 25 2004

This review is from: Scandal (Paperback)
Engaging Big Bad Wolf meets Naive Sweet Innocent story. Not quite as steamy as I would have liked, but still enjoyable.

An earlier reviewer said she saw this as an "Anne of Green Gables meets Russell Crowe" story. For me, it was "Anne of Green Gables meets Jason Isaacs". Same idea, different actor. ;-)

This was my first Amanda Quick book and I intend to read her others.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you can get through the first 50 pages, Aug 26 2002
This review is from: Scandal (Paperback)
Well, I must admit that I couldn't stand the naive romanticism of Emily initially. And I found it hard to imagine how Simon was attracted to her (which it appeared to be so), even though he meant to marry her for revenge. Anyway, as the story progressed, it was getting more interesting. Simon ended up not as mean as one would expect from someone seeking revenge but Emily's naivety bordered between boldness and stupidity. Nevertheless, I do find myself enjoying the read, minus some of the literary lines. It's always sweet to see Simon falling in love with Emily through his behaviour.
