Amazon.com Essential Video

This sprawling epic of bloodshed and excess, Brian De Palma's update of the classic 1932 crime drama by Howard Hawks, sparked controversy over its outrageous violence when released in 1983. Scarface is a wretched, fascinating car wreck of a movie, starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of Miami's cocaine-driven underworld, only to fall hard into his own deadly trap of addiction and inevitable assassination. Scripted by Oliver Stone and running nearly three hours, it's the kind of film that can simultaneously disgust and amaze you (critic Pauline Kael wrote "this may be the only action picture that turns into an allegory of impotence"), with vivid supporting roles for Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Robert Loggia. --Jeff Shannon

Teaching the World Mar 11 2004
Format:DVD
Scarface is a movie full of violence and narcotraffic but also full of lessons to teach the world. One of them is that money and power is not enough for someone to succeed. There must be passion, reason to live and entusiam, that's what living is all about, being able to give your best to others around you!The movie shows how immigrants try to succeed in a completely different country full of bureaucratic matters. For example immigrants are not able to get really good jobs because they don't have employment authorization therefore they have to get basic job such as cleaning, chef and this time of things, when they get tired of it they enter into the world of drug dealings and assassin, that's exactly what Scarface shows us. The ambition of a better life can cost your life.
The production of the movie was good, although certain parts were too obscene.
All the main caracter developed their parts very well. The sound effects were well placed and I believe that it would be good for others to watch it as long as they get the full meaning out of it.

This movie made me so angry! Feb 5 2004
Format:DVD
WARNING: This is a RANT against this movie that reveals many major plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know.

First off, let me say that I LOVE gangster movies and Al Pacino. This is one of the few gangster films that I don't like, and I seriously don't understand all the hype about Scarface. I did think it was skillfully done, but this movie just made me mad!! I hated Al Pacino's character. He is probably the biggest jerk ever portrayed on film. He abuses and uses everyone in his life including the woman he stole from another gangster, his sister, and his friends. When his sister marries one of his oldest friends, he shoots the guy. And his sister still stays loyal to him!!! After 3 hours of this, I was so glad that Tony got killed in the end. I only wished that everyone whose life he destroyed could have been there to pull the trigger on him.

I realize that since I hated this movie and Al Pacino's character so intensely, that means that he really is a GREAT actor. But great or not, I would never watch this movie again. The two stars are given to recognize Pacino's talent in creating such a thoroughly despicible and revolting character.
