If you've seen Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, then you know the entire plot of Scary Movie. That's okay, though, because this is a parody, and it helps to know the story in order to be able to get the jokes. No, the biggest surprise here is not the story as much as the amount of full-frontal male nudity. Really, in addition to all the dick jokes (and the ass jokes and fart jokes), there's a couple of shots of the male member, one of which is erect and used as a weapon. Scary Movie somehow ended up with an R rating, which in a sense is groundbreaking; perhaps our ratings board is loosening up after all.

But is it funny? That's the most important question, and the answer to that is yes. In the vein of Airplane!, with a dash of the Farrelly brothers, Scary Movie keeps throwing jokes at you one after another. The law of averages says some of them have to hit, and enough of them do to keep the movie entertaining. Unlike the makers of Airplane!, however, the Wayans brothers aren't making this movie out of a love of the genre, and unlike the Farrelly brothers, they don't make fun of retarded people with any sort of respect, so the humor throughout feels a lot uglier. Still, there are enough funny scenes in Scary Movie to make the viewing experience worthwhile. Special credit must go to Lochlyn Munro as Greg, the over-the-top jock, who steals the movie up until the time he's gotta die.--Andy Spletzer

Product Description

A familiar-looking group of teenagers find themselves being stalked by a more-than-recognizable masked killer. As the victims begin to pile up and the laughs pile, none of your favorite scary movies escape the razor-sharp wit of this outrageously parody.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scream-Wayans' Style! April 13 2004
Format:DVD
Honestly, I wanted nothing to do with this film coz I can't stand the films it was spoofing. It's basically doing for "Scream" era slashers(one of the worse subgenres is cinematic history) what "Student Bodies" did for heyday slasher flicks(I suggest seeing that film as well). I did watch it though coz I was impressed with the way the Wayans brothers spoofed "in the hood" films, and I thought they just might be able to pull it off. Well, I found this movie funny-in fact, very funny! Funnier than I was expecting. The jokes are all hit and miss like a Zucker Brothers film, but the good ones are very good. Believe it or not, it actually takes some intelligence to come up with such stupid jokes. There are certainly those who hate it for it's crudeness, but what do you expect when you're dealing with the Wayans brothers? I admire the fact that they don't wimp out and go the PG-13 route. My hat goes off to the Wayans brothers-if they continue to make them, I'll continue to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious spoof of some really bad movies! Dec 29 2003
Format:DVD
I am a fan of Scream, but I hate movies like I Know what you did Last Summer and The Blair Witch Project. So I was glad they were making a movie that spoofed on them. The Smiley Faced Scream is definately the funniest part of the movie. He makes several appearences and never fails to make you laugh. The toilet humor and the (down there) jokes will make your head hurt...because of how hard you'll be laughing. Just think if they made a "Scary Movie" spoofing on Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The acting was okay, yet it had flaws, but that made the movie better. If you are one of those people who don't like cuss words, toilet humor, (down there) jokes, and private parts of the human body being shown, stay far from this movie.
About the DVD: The DVD release of this flick was pretty darn good. It had a cool Behind the Scenes clip, and some pretty good additional scenes. It has some DVD-ROM features I forgot about. It has very good picture and it is widescreen. This would be a perfect addition to any DVD collecters collection. You have been warned!

When "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" hit the screens, we were given some of the funniest, off the wall visual and verbal gags to ever hit the screen. Then along comes SCARY MOVIE. While Airplane and Naked Gun settled for a more sexual-innuendo kind of humor, SCARY MOVIE pulls no punches in its excessive use of sexual activities and bodily emissions. Poor taste, probably...but they are funny. But even with these, there are some other brutally hysterical scenes. Not all the jokes hit, but they don't miss too often. Lochlyn Munro steals the movie as the buff Greg. Whether it's when he's screaming around in the locker room because of his organ's size, or when he's beating up and drop kicking Cindy (Anna Faris), he is one energetic manic character. Too bad he gets killed off too early, but even then Shannon Elizabeth's dramatic reading at a beauty pageant is another one of those hilarious scenes where you find yourself holding your side in explosive laughter. Shawn Wayans gay football player is also hilarious; Sheri Oteri as Gail Hailstorm is brilliant, and one can't help but admire Ms. Faris for keeping a straight face in her sexual encounter scene with Jon Abrahams. Also her Exorcist ripoff is totally side-splitting.
I haven't scene the sequels yet, but if the Wayans boys can maintain this kind of frenetic albeit crude pace, I am sure I'll find them entertaining.
PS I started out my childhood loving the Three Stooges!!! So, what do you expect?

This has got to be one of the most horrible sci-fi/teen movie parodies, I've ever seen. This is a hodgepodge of sorts. The erratic-sequencing of all the paltry sub-plots ("I Know What You Did Last Summer" comes to mind) are questionable. I seriously doubt, the (director's) movie's dubious-intentions on making the viewer laugh. In fact, I laughed so hard watching this movie.... NO. Actually I didn't, It made me want to vomit. Much to my dismay, this awful movie came-across as being egregious and inept. If you're interested in getting shot in the head, with this cinematic-disaster of epic-perportions, then this is the movie for you. For those of you, who have enough sense to avoid this kind of debauchery, I would highly recommend covering your eyes and ears. (see no evil, hear no evil.) This is a "Scary Movie" alright. I wouldn't see it, again. I would give this movie ***negative-stars*** for being the worst movie to ever hit theaters in decades. And another thing, Carmen Electra has got to be the worst-actor in the realm of the silver-screen. She's one of the hotest-chicks out there, I'd have to admit...but she comes-up way short on her own merits. If I were you, I would avoid watching "Scary Movie" altogether. Don't waste an afternoon with your friends on this movie. I would definitly go see "Not Another Teen Movie," it's well put-together and has belivable action-sequences from such teen-movies like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "10 Things I Hate About You", and (a timeless classic) "The Breakfast Club."

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed genious May 2 2003
Format:DVD
How can you write a review of such a film where to describe the film you would need to quote it, yet the lines lie in the delivery, and would sound dumb on paper (well, not paper, but...). It makes fun of such films as Scream, The Blair Witch Project, Election, I Know What you Did last summer, and eventually The Usual Suspects. What surprises me is that on the Usual Suspects, almost every review comments on the ending. In this film (which made fun of TUS ending), nobody comments on it. It also briefly makes fun of itself ("actors in their thirties....."). The Wayans brothers also make fun of the Sixth Sense, which got me laughing out loud. The have some class showing scenes from Shakespeare in Love, and Amistad. While I was laughing very hard at times, the infamous "bathroom" scene, Mrs. Man, and the chearleder breaking her leg (very graphic), had me do a back-to back-to back fast foreward. The deleted scenes were also disgusting and not funny. This film is ideal on dvd, as some scenes you want to watch again and again, while others you want to easily skip. This film is low brow, crude and hilarious. I would never buy it, but it is worth renting. Thank you for taking the time to read my review and feel free to leave me a helpful/not helpful feedback. God Bless America!
