About the Author

Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.  They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.
Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects.  Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio.
Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades.  Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau.  Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything.  Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

If you are planning to use this as a homeschool ... Sept. 19 2014
By melissa graham - Published on
Format: Hardcover
If you are planning to use this as a homeschool reference this isn't the book for you. There is no end of chapter questions, just a bunch of vocabulary before moving on to the next chapter. The book is affiliated with the Mastering Geography website that supposedly helps in the learning process but the book does not come with the code for it and must be purchased separately. This costs even more money. I am still using the book, but I feel, with either access to the website or a workbook (not the lab book), the chapters would be more understandable and I could be assured that my homeschooler is actually grasping the concepts.
Can not be used in Kindle for Windows 8 - that sucks BUT Oct. 16 2014

I just rented this for my science class and after the $42 rental found out it is NOT AVAILABLE FOR USE ON KINDLE FOR WINDOWS 8!!! My plan was to highlight the chapters in review and copy into a word document for easy study notes. Once I contacted Amazon support, I found out I COULD get the regular Kindle for PC app and then it worked like a charm. It is perfect to highlight and copy chapter summary or vocab words. It has made making study notes much easier. It was well worth the $42 to ease the burden of studying a subject that isn't my strongest!!!!

It is very easy to understand and not too much detail. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to know a little about everything.

Great book: Buen libro Nov. 24 2014

I rented this book for my Earth Science class in College. It is a great book. The website said the conditions of the book would be great and so it was. It didn’t take that much time to arrive. I ordered it Friday afternoon and it was in my mailbox Monday noon. It was really cheap to rent this book online, in the campus book store they were charging me 20 dollars extra. I liked this book because its like the high school books I used. Everything is well organized. I recommend you to rent this book if you are going to take an Earth Science class. The professor didn’t make us buy the new edition because he said it was almost the same it just had more pictures. I loved the book but loved the price more. They send you a envelope with the address it will go back to and everything Is paid so you don’t have to worry about shipping. I really recommend this book.

I received the right book. The only thing I'm not happy with is that the pages are not attached to to hard cover. I know I'm renting the book and many people have probably used it before, but I would of liked the pages to be attached to the hardcover.
