Great music score to a great film Oct. 26 2013
By Paul Allaer - Published on Amazon.com
A few months ago I saw "The Spectacular Now", a great coming-of-age movie that was one of the nice surprises of this past summer for me, along with that other coming-of-age movie, "The Way, Way Back". And wouldn't you know, the instrumental score for both of those movie was composed by the same composer: Rob Simonsen. Please note that there are actually two soundtracks for "The Spectacular Now": the instrumental score, and the songs that appear in the movie.

"The Spectacular Now (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" (23 tracks; 65 min.) brings the instrumental score as composed by Rob Simonsen. The soundtrack starts with "My Name Is Sutter Keely", introducing us to the main character of the movie, the troubled HS boy dealing with family issues and maybe finding love along the way. The music is upbeat and uplifting (with lots of handclapping), reflecting Sutter's happy-go-lucky nature, at least on the surface. In "Sutter and Amy", where the two first meet, the music is dreamy, almost magical, as it is with "Amy's House", which reflects the calm and peace that Amy and Sutter find at her house. Many of the tracks on here are in the 1 to 2 min. range, sometimes just snippets of music to give you a hint of the atmosphere of the moment (check out tracks like "Turn It Around", "Drive to Dad's, and "I'm a King"). But when you listen to this in its totality, it all flows together just beautifully. The instrumental score ends with "It's In the Air" as we watch the open-ended but optimistic conclusion of the movie. It is followed by 3 more tracks with songs that appear in the movie, including a great "Song For Sula" by Phosphorescent.

Bottom line: if you are into movie soundtracks, in particular the instrumental score, you will definitely want to check this out. Rob Simonsen has been bringing us great movie scores in recent years, including Life of Pi, Girl Most Likely, and best of all, Seeking a Friend For The End of The World. "The Spectacular Now", like "The Way, Way Back" is a very welcome addition to his catalog of movie score. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Soundtrack/Film Buff from Italy May 16 2014

Choose this rating as my daughter was the one I acquired the film and soundtrack for. She is Italian but studies English and listens to and watches English films,
She is a buff for this type of films.
She is a vampire series buff also, to include Hunger Games. She goes to the cinema 4-5 times, if not more, every month.
