Not Using It As A Rod Holder May 19 2011

I purchased these rod holders to mount homemade outriggers to my canoe for still fishing. A canoe is much less stable when it's not moving throught the water. For my purpose they work very well, sturdy, adjustable and easy to pull the outriggers up out of the water when trolling or paddling. As a rod holder I am sure they would also be great for the very same reasons. In my canoe however, I'm using Scotty's Bait Caster / Spinning Rod Holder for rod holders. I like the padded cradle for a bait casting or trolling reel and the slot in the front for a spinning reel, but especially the rubber strap to hold them in place so when I hook a wopper while paddling I don't take the risk of watching it all go overboard before I can drop paddle and catch it. In my opinion you can't go wrong with Scotty products.

Scotty doesn't mess around. Dec 20 2012

It impossible for me to give this less than 5 stars. Scotty makes the most incredible quality products and this is one of them. It's strong, thick, well engineered, and big. I can't find anything I don't like about any of their products including this one. Another very happy customer here and I will definitely be sticking with this brand.

Excellent for Outrigger Pontoons on a Canoe May 9 2012
By C. Pilot - Published on

I cannot vouch for how well these work as fishing rod holders, but they work very well as part of my outrigger stabilizer pontoon system (Google it) on my canoe. They're very sturdy with a variety of mounting options. Just looking at the design of these, I think there are probably better rod holders to actually use for that purpose. There isn't any notches or openings to help secure your rod in the holder (like around the reel), so I would imagine it would be easy to lose a rod in the drink with these.

For my purposes, I used them to hold a three-foot length 1.25" diameter PVC pipe, so I simply drilled a hole through the holder (and pipe), and installed a quick-release pin so the pipe (which is then attached to pontoons) stays in place.

Excellent product for my purposes, but you may find differently for use as a rod holder.

rod master June 14 2011

I like the tube style rod holders on my kayak because they are mounted behind me. trying with a standard cradle type holder to get your pole out when a fish is on is almost impossible. These work great and now I have the rod holder extensions which make these holders even more user friendly. Nice to have something you can get extra options for.
Great rod holder April 21 2015

I've been using Fish-On's for 30 years, and they are decent rod holders, but these Scotty's are even better. The holder itself can be mounted to the pivot post on either side which allows more flexibility in choosing a mounting position, and provides a positive lock. The 'rocket launcher' style keeps my rod handles up and out of the way. Also, the bolt pattern of the base is identical to my Fish-on bases.
