2.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Goes to Scotland Aug. 31 2012
By T Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
What a weird book! American Maggie Devereaux goes to Scotland to study Gaelic. She comes across a book of spells and decides to practice them. Meanwhile, evil abounds as young women on the college campus are brutally murdered. And then, the book gets even weirder.

Spells and weirdness aside, the book drags. We read every detail about Maggie's activities. And Maggie's not that interesting. Maggie is rather self-centered and downright rude to the aunt and uncle she's staying with in Scotland, only interacting with them when it suits her. She is very demanding to love-interest Iain, wanting him to skip his job to go traipsing about with her, and generally treats him badly.

All in all, a long boring bad read with unlikeable characters, and a really over the top, totally unbelievable, dumb ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little slow but a decent read June 21 2012

I picked up this book because the premise sounded promising. It still does.....sadly the book doesn't quite live up to its potential. The problem with this book is the character development. The characters all seem to suffer from LDS (lack of depth syndrome). Every character written has the potential to be a very engaging person, unfortunately they are never developed to be more than somewhat engaging caricatures. I had hoped that the writer would find his stride in the second book, and to be fair the characters are better developed in book two, just not as fully developed as I'd hoped for. I still really love the idea behind the books....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series!! Jan. 29 2012

I love this new series!! It reads like a movie. The charactors are well developed and the plot really gets the reader involved. Maggie Devereaux is a great heroine. Alone in the country of her ancestors, with new unexpected experiences upon her... who can she trust? Maggie finds alarming facts about her ancestors that her Grandmother never told her. I couldn't put this book down. And I can't wait for more great books in this series!!! No spoilers here. Buy this and you will come back for the next book in the series!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mystery April 23 2013

This was quite an enjoyable mystery, with magic thrown in to boot. I have to agree that Maggie tends to be self absorbed and can be quite manipulative at times. In spite of that, I liked the character well enough. It's a bit like having a friend who's exasperating at times, but in general means well. There are a few typos and missing words, but not many. Good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really a good book! Feb. 4 2012

Scottish Rite is really a good book! The characters are well developed and so likeable the reader cares about what happens to them. This is a very well written mystery -- I didn't figure it out until the ending, but the author played fair and all the clues were there as the story developed. I'm looking forward to the next mystery featuring Maggie and Iain.
