Without a refresher viewing, the details of Scream, the 1996 collaboration between horror-meister director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson (who also famously chronicled the ways of wayward teens without so much bloodshed as creator of the TV sensation Dawson's Creek) might be a little hazy. But even through the fog of memory, it's a pretty sure thing that texting, Facebook, live video streams on smart phones, and references to the Saw movie franchise were not major narrative devices. Even so, there is a common thread that yanks this inventive resurrection of the series back to life and ties it quite cleverly to the first, second, and third Scream installments. Summed up, that reach is captured in the word meta, which is pretty much what makes Scream 4 such a hoot as it scampers along on such a high plane of conceptual ingenuity. That several characters use the word in describing the action they're participating in makes the entirety of circular plot points, referential dialogue, and general level of self-reflexive action all the more exuberant. There are a few causes for honest screams in the action, even though the obvious raison d'être for Craven and Williamson's reteaming is to make audiences yelp with delight that trumps genuine fear pretty much every time.

Original cast members Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell have all returned for the reunion, which also introduces (and largely kills off) a new set of young but very familiar faces recruited for the festivities. The sizable ensemble cast includes Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Alison Brie, Hayden Panettiere, Marley Shelton, Rory Culkin, Adam Brody, Mary McDonnell, and Heather Graham, among many others who make up visitors or inhabitants of the imaginary town of Woodsboro, USA, scene of the meta-movie carnage that began 15 years ago. The excuse for this round of action is the return of original surviving victim Sidney Prescott (Campbell), who is making a hometown stop on her book tour. As the heroic survivor of the various incarnations of Ghostface, the knife-wielding killer in Scream's first trilogy, Sidney has become a celebrity and purposefully shrugged off the victim label, but still lives on as a folk hero. Turns out she's especially popular with Woodsboro's high-school population and the many horror film buffs who constantly analyze their every activity in relation to the behaviors of movie characters and the rights and wrongs of what to do when there's a killer on the loose. It therefore surprises no one that Ghostface has returned to haunt Sidney, including retired reporter Gale Weathers (Cox), her now-husband Sheriff Dewey Riley (Arquette), and the assortment of teenage dopes who saturate the entire venture with theatrical gouts of gooey, black blood. The movie-within-a-movie franchise Stab is also a major player in Scream 4. Its sequel count is now up to seven as we discover in the briskly crafted and very funny opening scenes. In fact, Scream 4 is constructed with smarter precision than any of its predecessors and would require a lot of brain power for someone who feels up to the task of trying to figure out who Ghostface is this time and why the killing has started again. But taking the story seriously pretty much defeats the purpose of the absurdly entertaining formal achievement that Craven and Williamson have created. All the stabbing and screaming and intricate (il)logic of horror movie conventions are simply part of the mysterious amusement of a concept that will not die, now delightfully retooled for a new generation. --Ted Fry

4.0 out of 5 stars A darn good slasher film -- but not everything I had hoped it would be, Jan 20 2012

This review is from: Scream 4 (DVD)
Scream 4 is a darn good slasher film, but I do not believe it truly deliver the goods that another Scream sequel should have - not after all these years. Those horror movie rules that the Scream characters are always going on about would seem to demand a film that is more shocking and over-the-top than the original, but Scream 4 just comes up a little bit short of those high standards, in my opinion. In addition to that, this film seems to commit some of the same mistakes that plague the whole slasher genre - for one thing, the overly long speech by the killer at the end. Of course, it has always been difficult to offer a critical analysis of films in this particular franchise, what with the movies within movies and, more importantly, the way in which the storylines play off of popular horror culture and the Scream movies themselves. When Scream 4 repeats something from an earlier film, you can't really call it derivative because such things are an integral part of this series' makeup.

Following a pretty good, patented Scream-type opening, we watch as the horrors of the past once again revisit Woodsboro - on the anniversary of the original killing spree that made Sidney Prescott a household name. Sidney (Neve Campbell) herself has finally emerged from her self-exile; having written a bestselling book on her experience of overcoming the traumas of the past, she has returned to Woodsboro for the last stop on her book tour. Ghostface, it seems, has returned as well - a new Ghostface repeating the same modus operandi and slasher murders of those who wore the mask before. Sidney hunkers down with her aunt and niece Jill (Emma Roberts), while Dewey (David Arquette) - now the sheriff - and his men (and one cute blonde deputy) try to identify the suspect and bring him/her to justice. For Dewey's wife Gail (Courteney Cox), struggling to adjust to a small-town life of relative anonymity, the tragic situation is a great boon, giving her another chance at fame and celebrity. Of course, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Many local teens seemingly have no parents, get together in ways their much-discussed rules for surviving a horror sequel tell them not to, sneak out of their houses in the middle of the night, and, naturally, suffer horrible deaths. In the same vein, it doesn't really matter what Sidney does, for the whole ordeal once again revolves around her. Another thing that hasn't changed is Craven's tendency to kill off the hottest females first - as if having already killed off the likes of Drew Barrymore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Rose McGowan wasn't enough for the guy.

As usual, you get several suspects to choose from, and I must admit I was quite wrong in my suspicions as to Ghostface's identity this time around. That doesn't mean I fully embraced the ending, though. On the contrary, I found it just a little too convenient and, for lack of a better word, conservative. I had hoped Wes Craven had something more daring and ambitious up his sleeve. Still, I admit I was surprised by several plot twists toward the end, so I can't complain too much about the way things worked out. I also have to admit that I never truly embraced the idea of a Scream 4. Scream was a quintessential horror trilogy, and a part of me would have preferred to maintain that legacy as it was. Fortunately, Scream 4 is good enough not to tarnish that legacy - although I'm not sure it adds anything to it in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scream's Still The Best Slasher Series EVER, And Here's Why...., Aug 23 2011

This review is from: Scream 4 (DVD)
No doubt about it!! Scream 4 is the movie that fans have been waiting almost a decade for!! Here's a sequel that's not falling prey to the horrible 3D/Remake formula, but rather expands the series into it's full potential!! Not since the 1st 3 movies has "Being scared ever been so much fun!!"

Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is now putting the past behind her. She's immortalized those lost in the Ghostface killings of the original trilogy in her self help book Out of Darkness. Her last stop to promote her book is Woodsboro, where the original murders took place. Staying with her cousin Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) and her aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell) Sidney starts getting calls from the Ghostface killer, telling her it's a new decade, so there's new rules to the formula he'll be using.

Bad things start happening, bodies start turning up left and right and the town is feeling the fear again!! Sheriff Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and his wife, fellow Woodsboro survivor Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox Arquette) show up and reunite with Sidney to hunt down the killer. In the meantime, Sidney is also trying to protect her remaining family from who which the killer has threatened to take away from her. The chase is on!!

Scream 4 is a terrific, scary and fun addition to this exceptionally clever franchise that only just keeps on getting better and better!! With scares, gags and humor aplenty, this IS the movie that clearly defines the principals this series stands for!! A scary good time with a little something for everyone!!

I think we can all agree that another sequel (as long as it's THIS good!!) beats a 3D/Remake any day of the week!! So pick up a copy when the time is right and enjoy a decade's worth of sheer brilliance!!

So, What's YOUR Favorite Scary Movie??

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!, Dec 27 2011
This review is from: Scream 4 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I love the Scream movies and I must say , this is the best of the series. I love the new cast and the brutal and gory deaths. I was surprised by the identity of the killer and the motive. After watching the third movie i had low expectations even after an eleven year hiatus, but i was pleasantly surprised!! Highly recommend!
