4.0 out of 5 stars For the novice Feb. 27 2004
Format:Audio CD
If you want to get into some Sonic Youth but are afraid to test their albums ( and I can fully empathize having being one of them myself ) this compilation will serve as a godsend to you. However I must warn you that you might feel a little tricked ( not in a bad way though ) with this compilation for on the most part this album is really mellow only with the later tracks piling on the noisier tracks but it does serve as a useful starter for anybody interested as it whets the appetite for more Sonic Youth records.
Buy this album and you might become a SY junkie.....join the club we all know how you feel

4.0 out of 5 stars SCREAMING FIELDS OF THE RECORDING INDUSTRY March 21 2003
Format:Audio CD
Collection of Sonic Youth singles between 1983 and 1988 sounds great but the songs don't stand as well alone as they do in the midst of their original albums. In fact, they leave one hungry for the wholeness of a Sonic Youth album and that seems to be the marketing strategy for "Screaming Fields of Sonic Love". 8 page CD booklet offers nostalgic pictures of vintage advertising posters for early "Sonic Youth" shows.

4.0 out of 5 stars for the begginner March 10 2003
Format:Audio CD
i liked this album for the updated sound in brother james. other than that, i use it to throw in the car when i want a sonic youth mix rather than bring 3-5 cd's. this cd is for begginners only, in my opinion because sonic youth fans collect all their stuff and never relent. i have 100 leaves and the syr ep's and i dont even like them but its all apart of SY and thats the dedication i have to them. this cd is a mundane attempt at giving people who may not know SY a greatest hits.
the songs are all good, from teenage riot to shadow of a doubt but most of us SY fans have them all anyway. if your new to SY then by all means click buy but otherwise move along.

2.0 out of 5 stars No reason to buy Oct. 2 2001
Format:Audio CD
No, there's absolutely no reason to buy this CD, unless you want to have a CD with a random selection of excellent songs, have a lot of spare money and don't have a CD burner.
Each track earns five stars, but what is the corporate logic behind compiling Sonic Youth greatest hits? Sonic Youth fans are well-known completists. Sonic Youth are a classic album-rock band and songs have no meaning taken out of context. Even if it is supposed to be a "the best" compilation, or an introduction, some of the shiniest tracks from 80's SY catalogue are missing - notably "Tom Violence", "Green Light", "Schizophrenia", "She's in a Bad Mood", "Catholic Block" ... oh, well, should i go on?
The only reason i give this miserable waste of plastic two stars instead of one is the curious inclusion of "Macbeth", which really is the best track from the obscure Ciccone Youth rekkord. Mind you, that Ciccone Youth is still worth buying in its completeness, despite its wackyness and the extra star is given to the record company just for NOT ditching Ciccone Youth at all.
