XXX (Full Screen Special Edition)

Vin Diesel is no James Bond, and he doesn't want to be. That's why XXX announced Diesel as the adrenalin-junkie Bond of the PlayStation generation, copying the Bond formula so shamelessly that this action-packed silliness would be a Bond movie if it starred Pierce Brosnan. Reuniting Diesel with his Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, XXX has an attitude (if not a brain) all its own, plucking Diesel's Xander Cage from his celebrity as an extreme sports renegade, recruited by a National Security Agency big shot (Samuel L. Jackson) to foil a nasty Czech villain (Marton Csokas) who's eager to depopulate Prague with remote-controlled biological weaponry. Toss in a sulky, sultry Russian agent (Asia Argento) and you've got extreme Bond-age for anyone who thinks tuxedos are passé. With a handful of eye-popping action sequences, XXX launched a movie franchise with a cool guy, another cool muscle car, and plenty of box-office sizzle. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Vin Diesel Revs Up in Triple X June 13 2004
Triple X is a non-stop thrill ride with an action hero as resourceful and clever as he is atypical of the secret agent genre. In this refreshing, highly entertaining vehicle, young Vin Diesel demonstrates he has inherited (actually co-inherited with The Rock) the crown of action movie star from the likes of Van Damme, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Stallone.
The female co-star in here is pretty good as the moll of a Czech crimelord. She has a very expressive face, unlike the blank Barbie faces of some of the actresses in these types of roles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What You'd Expect May 15 2004
By J
All style, no substance. All brawn, no brains. Great stunts, Lame acting. Great concept, pitiful followthrough. This movie is hugely entertaining and, I suspect, exactly the movie it's trying to be. Vin Diesel (not his real name FYI) is a credible action flick star but he's gotta start finding better scripts if he expects to last. The Rock has already staked a claim and Vin needs to get with the program if he expects to compete. Not much to say about this flick but it did turn me on to Rammstein, if nothing else.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining thrill ride of a film Aug. 6 2006
By Daniel Jolley TOP 50 REVIEWER
I'm not a huge fan of action movies, but I've quite enjoyed both of the XXX films. The original, starring Vin Diesel, is chock full of things that go boom, and I don't think the story is all that bad. I was especially happy to finally get to see Asia Argento for the first time - she is, among other things, the daughter of one of the true greats of European horror. I must admit I'm still not quite sure what all the Vin Diesel hysteria is about, though. He's certainly a different breed of actor, but I thought he had a few moments of inconsistency here. One thing I really don't understand is the inevitable comparisons between XXX and James Bond. I would never have even thought of comparing them because I see them as two completely different characters occupying opposite ends of the secret agent spectrum.

So, anyway, Vin Diesel plays Xander Cane, a rebel with an X Games mentality and a penchant for sticking it to the man. It's enough to get him noticed by NSA Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), and - needless to say - Xander passes Gibbons' test and soon finds himself ensconced amidst a group of dangerous anarchists in Prague. The bad guys are your typical malcontented youths who oppose everything society stands for and revel in the idea of unfettered freedom. What makes them special, though, are the scope of their operation and the plans they are cooking up to make the whole world all but implode. The newly christened XXX knows how to walk the walk and talk the talk, and that puts him in a position to learn just what Anarchy 99 is up to. Naturally, there's a woman thrown in the mix - the mysterious Yelena (Asia Argento), a pivotal member of the organization who might very well be more than she seems.

In 2002, Rob Cohen directed the action/adventure/thriller "XXX" starring Vin Diesel as the heavily tattooed, extreme sports enthusiast Xander Cage, who is recruited to become America's secret agent dubbed 'XXX' by Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson). Agent Gibbons recruits Xander because no regularly trained agent has successfully managed to penetrate a group of Russian expatriates living in Praque, Czech Republic that call themselves "Anarchy-99" and may have access to Russian biological weapons. Having very little respect for authority and living in a subculture of extreme sports enthusiasts and anarchists, Xander appears to have all the necessary qualifications to penetrate "Anarchy-99". "Anarchy-99" is headed by the former Russian soldier Yorgi (Marton Csokas), who has a seemingly emotionless Russian woman, Yelena (Asia Argento), working for him.
With practically non-stop action in almost every scene and a dash of heavy metal music, "XXX" is an entertaining film, though its videogame-style plot is predictable. Vin Diesel does come across as the smug, anarchist-turned-hero secret agent, but Marton Csokas is not convincing in his arch-villain role, nor is Asia Argento very good in her role. Unlike the James Bond films of the 1960's through the 1980's that tend to emphasize suspense over pure action, Rob Cohen and writer Rich Wilkes focused most of the film's 124 minutes on action sequences edited together with little character development in between. Some of the most memorable action sequences include the bridge, the trip to Columbia and the avalanche. The final action sequence was less realistic.

3.0 out of 5 stars worth buying if found at a pawn shop or something March 23 2004
xxx-i went into this film hoping vin would prove he is a great actor, which he did not do. at best he showed that he is ok, it's mainly his body that gets him these rolls. don't get me wrong i think he's great in some others, pitch black and knockaround guys. in those he handled co-starring rolls, so maybe he should stick to those. but none the less he does an alright job on this. vin also turned out to be one of the executive producers for this film.
for this film vin returned with two former co workers of his, fast and furious producer neal h. moritz, and fast and furious director rob cohen. with the long list of excutives you know neal had a fun time. i think he did a very good job as usaul, also ob did a good job with what he had.
the story follows xander cage a xtreame video maker going from outlaw to government agent. it's your tipical action, things blowing up film. it has nice prefomances aswell from asia arento, marton csokas, and samual l. jackson. also it features a surprise guest with eve as vin's manager.
