Nice album,
This review is from: Scurrilous (Audio CD)
I liked the album overall. It wasn't as outta hand as Fortress, but it was still classic Protest. In my opinion though, I just can't get into anything they do like I did with Kezia. Maybe it's cause they were so new at the time and it was refreshing, but yeah, it's still a great album.

Protest comes through with another masterpiece!,

Protest the Hero is one of those bands...when you first hear them, you're not sure what to think because it's overwhelming. The 6 finger tapping verse melodies, Rody's spine-bending vocal range, the list goes on and on. But the more you listen to it, the more you realize that there is a colossal musicality to what they do that transcends all the technique involved. Scurrilous is the album that makes this most apparent. Catchy, memorable, and unforgettable. The growling/screaming is largely gone, and while I occasionally enjoyed the contrast on previous albums I think it was a smart move and a natural progression to their sound. There isn't a weak track to be found on the album, although my favorites are definitely Moonlight, Termites, Sex Tapes, and Tongue-Splitter. Rody took over writing the lyrics and it's great, as things are now very real and it's a lot easier for the audience to identify with what's being said. Overall, this is probably one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time (Kezia also belongs on that list), and an extremely strong record that encompasses much of what this band is truly capable of. 5 stars, gentlemen. Can't wait for the live show in May.

ALL killer, NO filler,
By Ben Bailey - Published on Amazon.com

I have been a fan of metal for as long as I can remember. I am not one of the metal snobs who only likes one genre and trash talks all others. I truly enjoy all types of music as long as it takes talent, passion and originality. I have known about and enjoyed Protest the Hero for many years now but this is their first album that I have really gotten into and it is nothing short of amazing. Every song is filled with killer guitar riffs, catchy vocals and well thought out lyrics. This album definitely has the classic protest the hero sound but there is just something about it that flows much better and seems much more " complete " for lack of better term. I had extremely high hopes for the new Human Abstract album( I don't think they will ever be able to beat Norturne ) and while it was good, it is no where near the gem that is Scurrilous. Do yourself a favor and buy this album and if you have an opportunity go to a live show. Seriously one of the best live metal performances today.

I don't generally write reviews, but I had to add my two cents about this album. In my mind, this is by far the most complete PTH release yet (and I loved Fortress) and probably my favorite metal album of the last 3-4 years. Like many albums of the progressive metal genre, it takes several listens to get into. But when you put the headphones on and listen to this album, it is hard to argue that Scurrilous is their creative peak to date. The new lyrics are phenomenal - intelligent, incisive and at times, poignant. And the interplay between the vocal and guitar lines is seamless - this is a fine-tuned machine operating on all cylinders. The rhythms are constantly changing yet catchy as hell. I'm a big fan of Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me, Symphony X, 3, Into Eternity, etc. To me, this PTH album is the best marriage of nerd rock, virtuoso musicianship, intelligent lyrics but retaining the soul and emotion of the best metal / rock music. Typical progressive bands always seem like they're trying too hard. These songs are very naturally intricate, intelligent, yet visceral at the same time. Absolutely phenomenal album.
