My fav since poison study,
By
This review is from: Sea Glass (Paperback)
When I first read Poison Study oh so,long ago i was amazingly enthused for Maria Snyder's writing and characterization. It was, and still is, one of my favourite books, I have reread it several times over. That being said, I found that in the books that followed the author lost her way slightly. I kept reading the books that followed so clearly I wasn't entirely unhappy with her writing but I felt that the plot and characters had drifted away from the things that had made the first book so good.On to the second series, the Glass series. I didn't really think too much about Opal's character when she was in the first series but i was intruiged when I saw that Maria Snyder had written another book following Opal. Upon picking up the first book in this new series I found myself feeling frustrated again, soemthing was missing from the writing for me, so when I saw Sea Glass on the self I seriously debated as to whether or not i wanted to buy it. I am however glad that I did because it is for me, the best book that Maria Snyder has written since Poison Study. I think what was different this time was the depth and feeling that was brought to Opal's character. For any character to be truly likeable they have to grow and learn and become more in front of our eyes and Opal definitly did that. The story follows her after her return from near death with Kade on the icy mountain slopes of Ixia. Opal has retained her innocence and belief in the council and plans on returning to them to inform them about what happened, on her way though she is kidnapped by Devlen. Devlen seems radically changed after the loss of his magic and by the time that he has spent in his new body, and he convinces Opal to follow him with the promise of telling her where the real Ulrick is. What ensues is Opal's search for Ulrick, whom she finds also radically altered like Devlen, and then her subsequent return to the magicians keep. At the keep she faces suspicion and disbelif in respect to what happened to her and her faith and belief in the goodness of people is slowly eroded away leaving her a much darker and bleaker person. In the end only the faith and support of those that truly love her allows her to weather the challenges that she faces ahead. I really liked this book but i had to give it four stars for a couple of reasons: 1) Opal seems to be captured and escape and be captured again so easily despite the training that she undertakes to protect herself. Although not truly a problem it becomes somewhat irritating after a while. 2)The plot moved slowly for quite sometime before moving forward, pacing could have been a little stronger. overall though it was a really good book and i am looking forward to the next one

Meandering, but enjoyable,

My main problem with this book can be boiled down to one sentance: Opal is whiny. She feels so freaking sorry for herself that there was no room for me to feel sorry for her.The other problem is that this is definitely a middle book. While quite a bit goes on, very little really happens. Plenty of wandering around, introduction of several ideas that area going to be important later, but not a whole lot of importance gets accomplished. Other than that, though, it's a pretty good story. I'm really enjoying the way Devlen's character is moving along, in particular. Is he a good guy, or is he just pretending? I'm not sure yet, and neither is Opal, which is keeping us both very confused. My favorite part of this book is the bit with Janco, who I loved in the Study books. Too bad Opal already has more love interests than she needs...

Second in this series (Storm Glass, Sea Glass then Spy Glass) and is just as good as the first book. This is another "keeper" series for me along with the previously released Study series. Excellent story, great pacing, just an all-around great read.
