3D -- old technology and shoddily done,
By Zabad (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sea Monsters 3-D (DVD)
Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric AdventureThe program is interesting, informative and well done -- at least the 2D version. The 3D version of the program although it is exactly the same as the 2D version was a disappointment because of the old technology used to create the three dimensional effects. I had expected that from National Geographic the 3D version would have been done using Real 3D which is now the standard used in the cinemas and requiring polarized glasses to view or a near equivalent. Instead, the three dimensional effects are created by using the old red and blue technology which was probably old even in the 50's. The glasses (four pairs of them) are so small that they barely fit a child's face and if you are an adult who also wears glasses then forget it. It was also disconcerting to see things such as cloud clusters that were red on one side and blue on the other. This was probably because the 3D process was not used consistently throughout. If this DVD is ever reissued in a more modern 3D format, then I would consider buying another copy but for now I would recommend that you purchase the 2D only version which is also available and for a great deal less.

The program it self is short. It's about 45 mins. I don't think it's worth $24. Some places are selling it for $29. For about $16 it's a great blind buy. If you like to learn about sea monsters of ancient times. The 3-d adds to the learning experience too. Kids will love this disc. But again I just don't think it's worth $24 for such a short program.

Amazing Home Technology,

I first saw this movie in IMAX 3D and was truly impressed with a really good storyline and amazing 3D effects. When I saw this movie was released on Blu-Ray in 3D I was hesitant thinking the 3D at home would be a joke. I was proven otherwise. Even on the comfort of my couch the 3D is amazing. You still get all the feelings of the screen coming to life as well as objects projected so close you feel could be hit by them.

Stunning, amazing, informative and spectacular! Comes with 4 pairs of cardboard glasses. Do NOT use those (they're OK, but not great though!), Get plastic ones instead! Better fit, better view! Turn all your lights off, watch that DVD at night! It'll take your breath away! I really enjoyed it! Highly recommend!

This is NOT in contemporary 3D Blu-Ray format!,

This release is not in the new checkerboard 3D format -- the format is the traditional red/blue color shift. That's good news if you want to use this on a BluRay player that's not 3D Ready, but is not what we were looking for as a demonstration disk for our shop. |
