5.0 out of 5 stars In Search of the Trojan War (1985 TV mini-series documentary), Oct 19 2010

This review is from: In Search of the Trojan War (DVD)
Even though this was the first in search of book I read, I started the video series with "In Search of Shakespeare" (2003 TV series documentary). So you can imagine my surprise at seeing a young Michael Wood. The technology is a hoot. However the lack of a better form of graphics and the either dull original recording or pour transfer can distract now and then from the message.

This series "In Search of the Trojan War" is quit extensive and they had to pack a lot of information into mere 6 episodes. Each episode is packed enough that you need to thank time to digest the information and look up peripheral matters before viewing the next.

Even though the series is a tad out of date you will not notice most of this and still have a lot to learn from what information there is. I swear that even though I read several translations of the Iliad and took in recent movie that Michael Wood still found passages that I have missed somehow.

In any event your video library would be lacing without this presentation and you will find yourself periodically reviewing this series as a marathon.

The series does not say a lot about Michael and even his books seem to lack a good biography. I had to rely on Wikipedia for the most on his background and credentials.

1- The Age of Heroes
2- The Legend under Siege
3- The Singer of Tales
4- The Women of Troy
5- Empire of the Hittites
6- The Fall of Troy

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome journey into the past, April 8 2007

Micheal Wood is probably one of the best modern day historians alive today. All of his documentaries (and this is no exception), are presented with his unique style and personality that can bring the material out and be throughly enjoyed by both scholars and laymen. He brings the distant past into full view and introduces you to the events, characters and ideas that have shaped our past and created our present. He is extremely educated on the subject matter he talks about and presents the material with an elegance and simplicity that even people not normally interested in history I'm sure will find any of Micheal Wood's documentaries highly entertaining.

In this particular dvd we go on a 6 part journey of discovery into that most illusive historical event, that of the Trojan War. Did it really happen? Was Homer more of historian than a poet? Was the great walls of Troy real and what of Agammenon's vast army? Micheal Wood answers all these questions and much more. Whether interested in Ancient(Greek) History or not, I'm sure you'll find this dvd very informative and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have waited for years, July 10 2004

This review is from: In Search of the Trojan War (DVD)
This is one of the best presentations concerning the Trojan War. In a clear and erudite manner Michael Wood has made a documentary that touched on all aspects of the war itself and the late bronze age world.

He makes history "come alive" and his use of experts and locales are fascinating. I especially loved the episode about Homer and the bardic traditions.

The music is also stirring and adds to rather than detracts from the series. Whether you are a casual ancient history student or a Trojan War fanatic, this series will appeal to you. It makes all the films about the war (even the newest one, despite Brad Pitt) seem a waste of time. None of them catches the true story and spirit of the age as does Michael Wood in this wonderful program.
