Good technical people are not the people to write guides for software. This has been true for the last thirty years and holds true today. They know it too well and presume we know what they know! This guide is more a description of what Second Life is all about than a guide. Why for instance, include a history. There is no clear concept of what they were trying to achieve by writing this alleged guide.
The only items that were helpful were recommended places to go. The information in the book is already outdated and does not contain as much information than what is available by using "Search" in the game.
I do not recommend this book to anyone hoping to learn how to get around and use SL.

If you are a complete noob this book is a pretty good help. I found it didn't offer what I was truly looking for - information on how to build and do the fun stuff. However there is plenty of information for those wanting to become a resident and information on how you can make some money, how to behave etc. Some of it is a little outdated however that's because Second Life is a continually changing metaverse and it's hard to stay truly up to date. The chapter on inventory mangement is invaluable and actually avaible free on the second life website. If you have never used a virtual world before, you defintely need this book, otherwise you can probably manage with just the chapter on inventory if you have some smarts.
