Product Description

From Amazon.com

While her orchestra-backed debut solo recording, Miriam, largely portrayed Miriam Stockley (the distinctive vocal component of Adiemus) as an alternate Enya, Second Nature, her second release, attractively broadens her stylistic range. The South African-born vocalist still belongs in the New Age-easy-listening section of your music collection, but Stockley pursues an elevated level of "easy" that is smartly conceived and gracefully executed. Second Nature finds Stockley emphasizing more contemporary instrumentation and moods, and the effort yields winning results. Whether by design or not, Stockley could earn cross-format radio exposure with the jazzy allure of "Butterfly" or the shifting "Massai Rain" and its mix of ethnic-angelic voices, stylish rhythms, and muted trumpet. Stockley still lets her regal instincts shine on such pop-classical works as "Umoya," "One Dream," and "Finlandia" with its quiet prelude of jazz harmonies. And the delicate intelligence of her pop pieces ("Rainsong," "Sabancaya," and the lovely "Tula") is simply refreshing. Her nasal-textured child-choir sound is still in evidence here, but it's less pervasive than on her Adiemus recordings, a plus on a disc full of plusses. --Terry Wood

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit samey, Aug 20 2003

Well, I loved her other album, including the African rhythmed ones, so a full album of that style has a definite appeal. But each of the songs are just a bit too much alike. And there's only so much "Eeyayo" chants I can take before I start getting a bit agitated over unoriginality. However, it's excellent music, especially as background ambience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing singer, amazing voice!, Feb 18 2003

I've been a long time fan of Miriam Stockley ever since the first Adiemus album. Up until this point, I have all the Adiemus cd's including her 2 solo works. I bought second nature a year ago from Japan because I just couldn't wait to hear her new album. And what can I say? I love it and can't stop listening to it. My favorite track is defintitly Spring, not just for her voice but I also love the beat. African percussions beating to the soothing style of her music. I hope she never stops what shes doing and am definitly looking forward to her future projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Soaring, Soothing, Energizing!, Feb 15 2003
This review is from: Second Nature (Audio CD)
It's difficult to encapsulate the many virtues of this terrific follow-up album to "Miriam" (another must-have). Above all is Miriam's incredible voice...the voice that launched "Adiemus," but is even better served in her own material. Within any given song, her voice may be a breathy promise...a soaring anthem...or a chorus of tribal voices. It all makes for a blend which is "New Age" and "New World" - yet much more. The incredible musicianship and exquisitely layered production makes this music unique to the world which Miriam has created. This is music which feeds the emotions...by turns calming and inspiring. I happily give "Second Nature" my highest recommendation!
