first off, this cd is from a tape made by an audience member. so the sound quality is that of a bootleg, not a professional recording. if that sort of thing is important to you, then beware. personally, i dig the lo-fi sound here. it seems to suit this set: sun ra caught live in austria, on april 29, 1989, playing tunes from walt disney movies. the whole thing sounds like it was one heck of a fun time for the audience. i wish i had been there. "the forest of no return" sounds something like a tom waits performance from his freakier years. "frisco fog" is a powerful piece of big band swing, as is "i'm wishing," which runs over ten minutes in length. the highlights of this set, however, are "zip a dee doo dah," "high ho! high ho!," and "whistle while you work." these three rollicking performances are sheer joy. about as fun as music gets. i have a lot of mixed feelings about sun ra albums. love his swing music, mostly dislike the avant-garde stuff that i've heard. no mixed feelings about this album, though. wonderful stuff.
