Seecret Garden does not disappoint, Mar 30 2011
This review is from: Secret Garden (Audio CD)
I saw this musical in Toronto February 2011 and loved it so much I bought this Broadway version of the CD. It was wonderful and a great souvenir to honour the show. First class.

the cd tells the story beautifully, May 10 2004
This review is from: Secret Garden (Audio CD)
I have always liked the story of the secret garden, so when my drama teacher introduced me to the music from the show, I was captivated. I was chilled to the bone when I first heard, "I heard someone crying," so much in fact, that I asked for the CD for Christmas, never having seen the show. It has come to be one of my favorite cds and musicals of all time. The songs are hauntingly beautiful and romantic, I don't even need to see the musical because enough information is provided on the cd that the mood and setting is already playing out in my mind. I want to see the Secret Garden the musical now more than ever, but for now, I can revel in the beautiful artistry of songs like,"A bit of earth", "Come to my Garden," "Lily's eyes" and "How could I know." An added bonus, all the singers perform beautifully.

Broadway for the classical music buff, Feb 5 2004
This review is from: Secret Garden (Audio CD)
Although I have never seen this musical performed live on stage, I purchased this recording just to hear music composed by women composers/lyrisists with whom I was not familiar. From a musical perspective, the work and the performance are flawless! Each song on this CD is a treasure. Previous reviewers commented on the plethora of thematical material--there is not a dull or repetitive moment!
The performances are excellent! Daisy Eagan has a powerful and lovely voice for a young girl. She shines in her role as Mary. Charlotte Church should have taken some lessons from her. Daisy easily carries her part against the adult voices of Lily and Archibald in "I Heard Someone Crying" and lets it all hang out in her duet with Dickon, "Wick." Great work!
Alison Fraser's performance as Martha makes we want to see the musical with her in it! Alison's role is purely fun and tender. "If I had a fine White Horse" wins the prize for the most fun! I love Alison's gorgeous alto voice in "Hold On."
The men in the recording are well cast and exceptionally cast. Mandy Patinkin and Robert Westenberg blend nicely in their duets, while Dickon almost steals the show with his solo work.
My favorite part of this recording is Rebecca Luker as Lily. Rebecca's voice is probably one of the best broadway voices I have heard. She has a perfect vibrato-free tone that is well-suited to her role. Ms. Luker is preferable to Sarah Brightman's shrill exercises any day. I would like to hear her sing Phantom--that would be a treat.
Everything about this well-scored recording is wonderful. A definite must have for anyone, not just Broadway fans.
